Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello everyone, have just joined this forum today. My husband and I are both type 2 diabetic diet controlled. We now want to lose some weight as well. Any tips would be appreciated. By the way we are not great exercisers and we are 73 and 78 respectively. TIA

We are great travellers, type 2 diabetic diet controlled and wish to lose some weight. Advice needed, thank you.

Hi @Vias and welcome to the forum. What do you want advice on? Which form of diabetes diet control do you use - Low Carbohydrate way of eating (no calorie reduction) or Very Low Calorie dieting (which is in effect also low carb) ?

Hi @Vias
I'm 71 nearly 72yrs and am a Type 2 in remission by low carbohydrate way of eating (no conscious calorie reduction).
Low carb reduced my weight by 1/6th even though I did no additional exercise. I already did 30min brisk walk 5 to 7 days per week starting straight after my triple bypass - so from 2yrs before my T2D diagnosis.

If you are already doing Low Carb and not losing weight then try time restricted eating (aka 'intermittent fasting') or even 'One Meal A Day ' (OMAD).

Welcome to the forum @Vias

Travelling just means more food choices to enjoy and adapt to suit your diabetes 😛

How long have you been living with diabetes? And what approaches to food and eating have you had most success with so far?

There’s a general guide to enjoying food with diabetes here

and some possible menu plans with varying different approaches from low calorie to mediterranean and low carb or thrifty.

There’s no one single approach that works for everyone - so really it’s a matter of sifting the options to get something workable for you, which meets your needs and gives you the results you are after 🙂

As said above, some choose low carb diet control, which seems to work well for them.
But it is diet control for life.
I decided to reverse my diabetes by losing weight.
It may not work for everyone though.
I started off on a low fat diet, then the 800 calorie shake based Newcastle diet.
Like you, I like to travel, so I didn't want a fussy diet to worry about, now I can eat all foods, all I need to do is eat sensibly, by choice a Mediterranean style diet, but anything if I need to, and watch the weight.

Thank you for your reply, we are looking to reducing our carbs but not always sure what to eat.

What sort of things do you currently eat for breakfast/ lunch/tea ?

Knowing what foods you usually eat can help people to suggest slight changes that might reduce your carbs without you having to drastically change your diet from foods which you like
