For those of you on diet and exercise what sort if food do you eat and how much exercise do you do. Also how long is it possible to remain on just diet without having to go on medication?

I think the answer will be similar to 'how long is a piece of string', as people can vary so much and it would depend a lot on how damaged your beta cells were. Even with the best will in the world, some people will need the support of medication, although it may be significantly reduced by sticking to a good diet and getting plenty of exercise 🙂

Although I am T1 on insulin, this fact clearly shows me how beneficial regular exercise is since my insulin requirements reduce significantly when I am exercising (and increase when I am not, as at the moment because I have a bad cold!). Personally, I consider 'regular exercise' for me to be around 90 minutes a day for 5 days a week (sometimes more, sometimes less, but that is probably the average). I have read experiences here from many people who have sustained good control without medication for many years - whatever you achieve, your control will be better and medication requirements smaller if you are fit and healthy 🙂

As Alan says everyone is different, and I guess it will depend partly on your own body's ability to keep going, and partly on what sort of dietary changes you make.

I am pretty sure I've bumped into T2s on various forums who are still well controlled on D&E after 10 years, but whether that would be possible for you I have no idea.

I think it would also be affected by how active your job is and how hot or cold it is where you work and live.

I have known people who have been diet and exercise controled for very many years, but it depends on your make up and how well you are.

I have been fortunate enough to maintain tight control on diet and exercise for 6 years - long may it continue!

I get help from a Diabetes Specialist Dietician - I recommend you ask your GP to be referred if you have not been already. I found it was a case of replacing unhealthy food with healthier options that I enjoy. I enjoy what I now eat more than the unhealthy previous choices.
