Hi Heasandford,

When we went to FFL this year we were astounded by how amazing paediatric care was in Germany compared to here in the UK. The average HBA1C for a child over there is 7.5 (or less) for something like 80% of children whereas here it is less than 15%! Luckily Alex is in that 15% group - and we have the best team in the UK (in our opinion anyway) - but it is worrying that the UK are so backward in their thinking. In Germany when a child is diagnosed the whole family go for training (including extended family members) and Schools are involved from day one - also Phsychologists are part of the Medical Team and see the child immediately to help them come to terms with the diagnosis. They showed us a chart of 'normal' children and depression compared to a child with Type 1 and the differences were obvious - Type 1 children suffer more depression than any other children. But the same chart for a child in Germany showed very little difference and in fact their self-esteem was often higher than the 'normal' population of children.

Hopefully when this new requirement for GP's and Consultants comes into force ( I think its today?) the better ones will stay in post and the rest will be either offered training to bring their skills up to scratch or they will leave thier post.🙂Bev

I hope that they all take up the training - thanks for the update! So much is down to support and mental state - your son is also lucky having you!
