Hi everyone,

I was diagnosed yesterday with diabetes type 2, this new diagnosis comes on top of my existing health problems; fibromyalgia, osteo-arthritis, cervical spondylosis, lower lumbar disc degeneration, anxiety and depression. Just looking for advice and support really.

A little about me! I'm 47, engaged to be married hopefully next year, I'm a mom to 2 girls and 2 boys and a stepson, and a nanny to 2 beautiful granddaughters!

Looking forward to making some friends 🙂

Welcome to the forum, what a lovely family you have.
How did you come to be diagnosed, I assume you had an HbA1C test, do you know whet the result was as that will indicate how much work you need to do and were you given any medication as that information will help to target any suggestions. Do you have weight to lose?
You have a lot of other health considerations so whatever dietary regime you choose to help has to fit in with those.
Many people find a low carbohydrate approach is successful in reducing blood glucose and losing weight if needed.
This link might give you some ideas for modifying your diet, it is a low carb approach with real healthy foods which should fit in with family life. https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/
Do have a look at the Learning Zone for information to give you a better understanding of the condition.
Please do come back with any questions as I'm sure you must have as it is a lot to take in at first.

Hi Claire, welcome to the forums 🙂

I totally had a whole thing typed out but @Leadinglights covered it all so I'll just stick with a hi and welcome

Hi, yes it was a HbA1C test 50mmol/mol. I have my first appointment with the diabetic nurse on the 10th May (not sure what to expect as its a telephone consultation)
I am currently losing weight and a member of SW, which is going okay, i've lost 1 1/2 stone so far 🙂

Thank you for the link and all the info x

Your HbA1C is not desperately high just into the diabetic zone and certainly the weight loss will help with blood glucose levels. Just be careful with the SW foods are they are often higher carb than many could tolerate and keep their blood glucose where it needs to be. It may work for weight loss but not always for lowering blood glucose. It would be worth working out the carbs in the meals you are having and if needed adapt them with some lower carb substitutions.
The principals of SW are a bit different to the low carb approach for blood glucose management. That is not to say it won't work for you.
Getting a blood glucose monitor so you can test at home if those meals are OK for you would be a good investment. The GlucoNavil is one with the cheapest test strips available on line Amazon or similar. You should buy extra strips as you only get a few in the kit. Testing before you eat and after 2 hours is what people advocate to see if the meals you have are OK, an increase of no more than 2-3mmol/l is good and a post meal of no more than 8.5mmol/l.
