Good morning

I was diagnosed yesterday with an HBAC1 score of 48. My GP said over the phone that due to my age (40) she wanted to consult a specialist as to if I have T1 or T2 - due to Covid she wasn’t able to give a timeframe on this. I had mentally prepared for T2 (and begun making lifestyle changes to diet etc) but am now finding this ambiguity difficult to cope with.

Welcome @JJ1980 🙂

I can see that uncertainty about your diagnosis is worrying. On the positive side, it sounds like your GP is very switched on and pro-active in getting a proper diagnosis for you rather than just assuming.

Are you on any medication at the moment? How did your diagnosis come about? Are you testing your blood glucose at home?

It must be a worry - but your Hba1c is not dreadfully high at the moment, you are only just into diabetic numbers.
Have you got a blood glucose tester?
I was thinking that if you can check your numbers after eating and see if your changes are having an effect it might help you to feel more confident.
What changes to your diet have you got planned?

I was having some tests done because I’d had some tingling in feet. I’m not on medication and I have not done home testing.

I’d recommend getting a blood glucose meter as then you can see exactly what your blood sugar is doing, especially in response to food. Perhaps you could ask your GP if they’d prescribe test strips for you at least until you have some definite answers. You can buy the strips yourself but some are more expensive than others.

What’s your diet like at the moment? What changes are you planning to make? Sorry for all the questions!

Hi.

Hi. I’ve cut down on carbs and snacking. Have managed to drop about 3lbs. Still 13st 7.
Thanks for the tip on the blood glucose tester

Keep the questions coming and let us know how they progress with confirming your diagnosis. An unsettling time but it is good that they are considering alternatives.

Hello and welcome to the forum @JJ1980 🙂

Hi, no matter whether you are Type 1 or Type 2, a low carb way of eating can help minimise the need for medication.
And can help you have really good control of your Blood Glucose.

Just for clarity... a T1 will always need insulin, because T1 is a condition of absolute insulin deficiency.

I think what Ian means is that moderate or low carb diets in t1 can result in lower bolus insulin doses, which some people prefer.

Welcome to the forum @JJ1980

Sounds like you have taken some sensible precautions for the time being.

Hope you get some clarity on your diagnosis soon. It may be that your GP wonders if you might have LADA, a form of slowly-developing T1 that can resemble T2 in the early stages (while there is still some insulin production as the beta cells are gradually being killed off by the immune system).

Classic T1 is often diagnosed with a higher HbA1c and more dramatic BG elevation.

Let us know how you get on.

I also have the same situation. Fatigue and tired but had covid 7 months ago. Think I have been pushed into type 1 which is scary. I’m checking my bloods and I’ve been exercising every days and cutting carbs which has helped me but I am probs my going to be falling into the type 1 catorgory which is not brilliant but manageable. Doctor is abit vague but I don’t think they like to boggle you with facts. I was very poorly and lost my tastebuds with covid. Still have the antibody ironically ‍♀️
