Hi all

John from Lincolnshire.. 51... yesterday diagnosed with early onset of type 2... which I may be able to correct with diet.. looking forward to the challenge... and early wake up call. After yesterday's Frank discussion with nurse about things this has been coming for a while... mission starts today... just gotta educate myself into eating properly.. ie not just one meal in an evening when I get home for work.. skipping breakfast and dinner most days.. gonna try hard... and wife is gonna join me too... although helping an elderly neighbour and walking her dog most evenings means we don't get to sit down till gone 8pm to eat or cook... so I need food diary app... look at some decent hopefully as cheap recipes... John

Hi John, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sounds like a good plan to me, and great that your wife is going to join you - what's healthy for someone with diabetes is healthy for everyone! 🙂 I'd recommend reading Maggie Davey's letter for starters, and getting hold of a copy of the excellent Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker - these should give you a good idea of where to start and what to look out for 🙂 Also, something that is immensely helpful, but rarely advocated by doctors for those not on medication, is being able to test your blood sugar levels yourself using a home monitor and test strips. There are many brands available, but for those buying their own the biggest consideration is the cost of the test strips. High St brands can cost up to £30 for 50 strips, but the cheapest option we have come across is the SD Codefree Meter which has test strips at around £8 for 50. Many of our members use this and all meters have to conform to the same safety and accuracy standards. Have a read of Test,Review, Adjust by Alan S to understand how testing helps you learn about your body's own individual tolerances to different foods. You won't need to test forever, but this provides you with real information as you reassess your diet, rather than guessing or assuming that something is 'healthy'.

Please let us know if you have any questions and we will be very happy to help! 🙂

Welcome to the forum John.
