Type 2
Hi all,

My name is Murray and I have been diagnosed with type 2 last week. I hope I can get some advice from you all on the condition, a lot of conflicting information out there. I suppose i am the typical story, too much booze, too much soda, too much chocolate. I have so far totally changed my diet, from now on I will consider certain foods as poison but I am so unclear on what my diet should really look like. Anyway, at the moment I am trying to eat well, fruit, vegetables, poultry, nuts etc. I will talk more in the future but at the moment there is a big game to watch on T.v., pretty much my 1st England game without an alcoholic drink in my hand!

Welcome to the forum
First no need to panic as it is a manageable condition as long as you take it seriously which it sounds as if you have.
There is no need to deprive yourself of things you enjoy but just make good choices on the specifics and portion size. So you can have chocolate but dark is better, you can have diet drinks and alcohol but some is better than other, beer, cider and liqueurs being the worst but spirits and dry wines are OK. No foods should be regarded as poison but had in moderation.
All meat, fish, eggs, cheese, dairy, nuts, veg, salads and fruits like berries are all good to base your meals on with small portions of high carbohydrate foods like potatoes, rice, pasta, bread, breakfast cereals being the big hitters.
What dietary approach will be suitable will depend on how far you are into the diabetic zone, so how high your HbA1C is and if you are on any medication but many find a low carb approach successful. Have a look at this link for some ideas https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/ (once the footy is finished).

Hello Murray and welcome to the forum! I will not advise you as I am a Type 1 of 60 years standing. However, you do not have to deny yourself alcohol just be sensible. I cannot drink any because of the painkillers I take to try and manage Phantom Pain. Personally I found craft beers totally unpredictable and Guinness the best for BGs. Or maybe a decent red wine. I suspect Type 2s will be along after the game or tomorrow! 🙂

Hi Murray,
Generally I haven't eaten and drank the wrong things. Small portions. I am now diagnosed as pre diabetic. I am on a learning curve. Still hoping I can pull back from being affected too much. Am losing weight but I never considered myself overweight. Dr's have never said that I was.

The number I was given after my blood test was too close to being classed as diabetic. Yet they said they are not going to test me again for...a year.

Many I know are checked every three months. So I have had to do my own research and also appreciate the support, information, help and advice given here.

Sometimes we are just unlucky. Wishing you well and I hope that you are able to turn things around.

Yep, I don’t consider myself to be particularly overweight at 14 stone but I am quite active I suppose. Thank you for your reply.
All the best!

There’s no one-size-fits-all diet that will work for everyone, but it sounds like you are making great progress in ditching the junk and leaning into real foods.

Hope you can find a new way of eating that is flexible and sustainable for you, and which gives you the results you are looking for.

Let us know how you get on 🙂

I cut out the high carb foods I'd been recommended to eat on a 'healthy' diet, stuck to a maximum of 10% carbs, but ate anything else - except seed oils which I had been suspicious about for a while.
I am still eating everything low carb and doing very well.

Ah thanks Drummer, When you say max 10% carbs, what does that mean?
Any food which are more than 10g carb per 100g.
Some people are a bit more relaxed than that and look at the carbs per meal and by having a smaller portion of any foods which are high carb can tailor their menu.

Ah thanks Drummer, When you say max 10% carbs, what does that mean?
There is information on the net listing the carb content of foods, by weight.
Watch out for ones from the US as they include the fiber as part of the carbs - note the spelling.
If it is fibre then that is not included.
If every 100gm of the food is providing 11 gm or more, I avoid it - unless it is a high cocoa chocolate, but I only have one square of it in a day, so it is not a significant hit.

Ah ok, is that what sugars or just carbs? I know nothing, my wife just asked me.
Sugars are carbs so look at the carbohydrate amount, otherwise you will be misled into thinking something is OK when it is not. ALL carbohydrate convert to glucose just some do it more quickly than others.
The occasion when you might look at the 'of which sugars' is if you are comparing a food with the same carb content you might choose the one where the sugar is lower.
This is all explained in the introduction to the Freshwell link I posted, maybe your wife should have a read of that as well as you.

Many thanks, I will look into it, fabulous!
