At risk of diabetes
Hi Everyone
Can anyone please help as I'm feeling overwhelmed at the moment I was diagnosed as prediabetic in June. The year before my Hba1C was 34 but jumped to 44 in one year. My GP recently asked if there was pancreatic cancer in the family as I have also lost weight I did tell her as I have cut out carbs and sugary snacks that's why I have lost weight. The questions I would like to know is that a big jump in one year? and is it normal for GP to start asking about pancreatic cancer she has frightened the life out of me. I have no symptoms and not overweight. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Many Thanks

A change in lifestyle can result in blood glucose going up, for example stress, less exercise and well as diet slipping and eating more carbohydrates than you body can now tolerate.
However good that it has been picked up at this point and you can assess your diet and the amount of carbohydrates you are having and see if there is any movement you can make to reduce them to see if that makes a difference..
You would not necessarily get symptoms at a prediabetic level and often people get diagnosed when they have some routine blood tests
A look at this link https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/ may point you in the right direction with some ideas for modifying your diet, there may still be things you are having which are a bit too high carb in the portion size you are having. There are many foods which people think are healthy options but may not be so.

Welcome to the forum @Castlecombe156

Sorry to hear how anxious you have been made to feel :(

Going from 34 to 44 does represent some sort of change. Was the 44 your June reading, and when did you change your menu?

If you aren’t overweight, and your HbA1c is continuing to rise despite a lower carb meal plan, it might be worth your Dr considering if your diabetes is a slow-onset form of T1 which can occur in adults (called LADA) and which can sometimes look a bit like T2 to begin with.

Unintended weight loss and not being overweight at diagnosis can be a couple of red flags for that.

But good to know your Dr is on the lookout for pancreatic cancer too. That’s often not spotted early enough. Has your Dr given an indication of whether they might take a precautionary xray or scan?

Thank you for replying.
I had a repeat blood test last month after completely changing my diet and my Hba1C has came down to 42 so 3 months between blood tests. My diet before was not good eating late at night and eating lots of sugary snacks chocolate cakes etc and going to bed soon after. The DN at the surgery has said to continue and recheck next April.

The weight loss was because of the change in diet - thats what I'm hoping.
No scans or xray has been requested but had some bloods done.

Many Thanks
