Hi,
Ive just been diagnosed with prediabetes. My GP was completely useless and couldnt really offer me anything in the way of tips or resources. I have heard that diet/exercise can make a big difference and as a slightly overweight 40-something-er, I would LOVE some help on where people have got good exercise or diet tips, or just some good old fashioned love and support! 🙂

Where did people go to find help? Who did you talk to? Was having this community a really useful tool? Is there anywhere offline where you have gone to meet and chat with other pre-diabetics?

Thanks so much in advance for any support - just very worried here about how to make a change to my life on my own! 😱

Hi Sarah, welcome to the forum 🙂 Exercise and losing weight will certainly help bring your blood sugar levels under control. Just something as simple as going for a brisk walk each day can make a difference, or if there is a particular sport you enjoy (or used to enjoy!) why not take it up more regularly. Swimming can be an excellent form of exercise, or if you join a gym they will usually be able to tailor a workout session to meet your needs 🙂

I would suggest that, although diagnosed as pre-diabetic, you regard yourself as having diabetes and make adjustments to your diet and exercise accordingly. I would recommend reading Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter and getting a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker so that you understnad more of what it all entails.

Don't panic! Diabetes is a condition that can be controlled successfully, and you can lead a full, active, happy and healthy life with it if you look after yourself properly. We have many members here who found themselves in exactly the same position as you are in now, and they have transformed their lives, now living with healthly blood sugars and feeling ftter and healthier than they have for ages!

Have a browse of our Weight Loss Group section for tips and encouragement.

Please ask any questions you may have - nothing is considered 'silly', so if you are wondering or worrying about something, please ask! 🙂

Hi Sarah, welcome. You've landed a great resource to help you. No two diabetics are the same, but you're right - diet and exercise can both delay the progress of Type 2. The weight loss threads will give you lots of tips if that's what you need help with (I'm a Slimming World devotee, as you'll see from my posts). My main aim for now is to delay the day when I'll have to rely on insulin. For me, weight has been a major factor in my diabetes control (or lack of). Good luck in finding out what suits your own body.
