Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I am not surprised that I have developed type 2 diabetes as my mother was also a type 2 and I had bouts of gestational diabetes with my last 2 pregnancies. It's still a shock though but I am lucky that my diet is already quite healthy except for ice cream and muffins. It was the massive weight loss that sent me down to the docs. Lovely for new clothes BUT...other family members became concerned. So here I am hoping to learn more about it all to make this transition as easy as possible. Cheers

Welcome to the forum Sharon Barrett. You're right that genetics play a large part in your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. How long ago was your last pregnancy? What treatment are you following? Diet / exercise / medication - what type?
One thing is unusual, though - "massive weight loss" as you describe it, is not a usual symptom of type 2 diabetes, although it is a symptom of type 1 diabetes. So, it's worth bearing the alternative diagnoisin case you can't control your blood glucose levels with the usual type 2 treatment.

Welcome to the Forum Sharon. Sorry to hear about your diagnosis but you will find people here very friendly and helpful.

Hello Sharon and welcome to the forum. 🙂

Gestational diabetes was 15 years ago. Not on any meds or programme atm. Have doc appointment. The surgery nurse called me today to give me the news so I can expect a whole lifestyle change I imagine. Thanks for the add to the group. Cheers

Hello Sharon,
Welcome.

Fire away any questions ! - we are a friendly bunch, all in the same 'rotten' club.

I try to think of it as a 'wake up call', a new life time challenge of being ( even ) healthier... !

It's a massive shock for sure - for anyone.

Best of luck,

Shoran.

Hi Sharon, I'm 3 weeks in now and agree with Copepod keep an eye on your diagnosis. I too have a healthy diet and am not overweight. A week after type 2 diagnosis and feeling very poorly it was rediagnosed as type 1. Now with correct medication starting to feel almost human again. Really missing fresh fruit though down from 4 or 5 pieces a day as snacks to 2 as part of meals
