Hello all,

I have been diagnosed today with type 2 diabetes.

I have been going through information with my gp and they have prescribed metaformin.

We have discussed the fact I do need to loose weight to help reverse this.

I want to loose weight but in the back of my mind I’m worried that I don’t eat fruit and vegetables because as soon as I try I’m literally heaving.

I have voiced my concerns with my go and they have said to just cut down on portion sizes.
I’m just worried that I’m going to get in a hole of depression and just give up

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis but welcome to the forum. Do you know what your HbA1c is (the blood test that led to your diagnosis) as this will determine how much you need to do?

My gp didn’t really go into to much details just that from my bloods I had a score 66 and thats about it

OK, that would be your HbA1c and 66 is quite high, so it's understandable that your were prescribed Metformin. However, as well as taking your medication you'll also need to look at your diet, be more active and (if necessary) lose some weight. Did you get any advice along those lines?

Yes some dietary changes will be the most powerful thing you can do, the metformin will just help a little bit.
However there is no need to eat foods you don't like just because that is one of the things people find helpful. trying them in different ways could be an option, raw rather than cooked, made into soup, cooked in a different way may be worth an experiment.
What do you normally eat so you get vitamins and minerals as that is something to make sure you are having. Are there any veggies or salads items you can eat. Fruit not so much a worry as they are quite high carb except berries which are the lowest.
It is carbohydrates you need to be reducing portions of but there are plenty of foods you can eat, meat, fish, eggs, cheese, dairy. Have a look at this link as it may give you some ideas https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/
You may be better to try a shakes- based regime to give you a kick start, some people here have found that successful as long as you realise there will then be the transition to a regime with reduced carbs as people generally will still have a problem with carbohydrates.

My gp was mainly advising that they can I’ve 12 weeks free to weight watchers or to slimming world. I can eat peas sometimes carrots or sweet corn at a push. I tend to take vitamin supplements to keep me boosted as much as possible, I have never heard of a shales based regime before. Thank you for the link I will take a look

It should read "shakes" not "shales" I believe. ie. Meal replacement shakes.

Ahh that does make more sense, i think I just need to understand more about what I shouldn’t eat. Like rice and bread I’ve heard are a no go which I thought if whole meal would of been fine

If you go for either of those programs then make sure you tell the consultant that you are Type 2 and they should point you in the direction of a lower carb menu plan.

There are just as many carbs in the brown version of foods like pasta, bread, rice, it is just for some people the carbs are converted to glucose more slowly. It all depends on people individual metabolism.

It's a shame that you have a problem with fruit and veg as there are so many things you can do with veg like cauliflower and celeriac, while berries (straw-, rasp-, black-, blue-) are a popular breakfast option as they are lower in carbs than things like apples and bananas. How are you with salads?
