Welcome to a club no one wants to join!!

You will get good advice on this forum. Tell us a bit more about your diagnosis, what advice/medication you've been given.

Generally many T2 seek to control their blood glucose by monitoring - if you weren't given a meter it's worth buying as it allows you to see the impact of food on your blood sugars. I reduced my carbs following advice from this forum and am successfully maintaining being in the pre diabetic range a year on. So I basically limit bread, rice, pasta and potatoes. No food is off limit, including desserts, it's just moderation and has to be part of what I allow myself in carbs.

Good news is Xmas lunch will be fine if you limit potatoes and parsnips and compensate with meat and green veg. A small amount of xmas pudding is fine with double cream!!! And wine, well I love wine and it's carb free !!

Thanks for your reply. It’s all come out of the blue- following an op I had a blood test to check there was no infection. Found out there was no infection on Monday but I have type 2 with a measure of 58. Saw the diabetes nurse yesterday and got some info but feeling a bit overwhelmed. No medication for diabetes was given but Been put on Lisinopril for high blood pressure and got a blood test in a week to see if they are working. Being referred for a living with diabetes workshop and seeing the nurse again in 8 weeks to be retested to see how changes in my diet are working. We eat fairly healthy meals just struggling with treats and snacks. Did you do everything in moderation from the start or once your levels were better? Not been given any guidance for total amount of carbs/sugar I should be having which would make me feel more in control. Which meter did you buy? Thanks for your help!

58 isn't that bad, I was twice as much. Have a look at this for what your 58 means. You are aiming to get under 42. I was given a meter and strips but as I can only have 50 strip so I bought this one from Amazon.

Someone will come along with a link for how you test - watch a youtube video for how to do it. Basically test when you wake, before you eat, 2 hours after you eat and aim for between 4-6 before meals and upto 8.5 two hours after eating. It's the rise that's important so aim for about 2. So if before food you are 5 then look for 7.

No I didn't do everything in moderation when first diagnosed!!! I was so freaked out at how high I was and that I could see the nurse thinking that my meds would need to increase that I went into panic mode. I severely restricted carbs and absolutely no treats for 3 months. I've relaxed since then and maintained my levels so no need to increase my meds.

Snacks - try cheese and nuts. You can have a treat but check out total carbs. Say a bounty bar (single one) is 10g carbs - that is okay on its own but I wouldn't eat if I had just eaten a sandwich (I use Tesco high protein bread as it's 1/2 carbs of normal bread) but if just having a cup of tea some hours after eating I may have one.
