Hi All
I was diagnosed with type 2 last July and have been managing my sugar levels really well with diet and exercise. Just lately though (the last two weeks) I am really struggling to keep my levels below 6. In fact I've only had one reading below and I had to do two hours of Zumba to get that!
Any ideas or help?
My highest readings tend to be mid-morning and late evening (readings between 9 and 14) - but I am starting a little over seven everyday before I've even eaten anything...
Thanks for any advice you can give

Hi, it could be that you need a little help now with the likes of metformin, worth talking to your doctor or diabetic nurse.

Some people also use a low carb diet plan which works with them, others on here who do the low carb plan would be able to help more.

Hi Nettie, welcome to the forum 🙂 It does sound as though you might need a little extra help from some medication. What are your bedtime readings like? How soon after waking do you test and eat? A lot of people find that their levels rise a lot in the morning between waking and eating due to the liver releasing extra glucose - eating usually 'switches off' this mechanism. Also, people tend to be more insulin resistant in the mornings so it can be a good idea to eat low-carb or no-carb breakfasts. When are you testing in the late evenings - how long after eating? You might need to adjust the amount of carbs in your evening meal by reducing portion sizes of carby items and replacing them with more vegetables.

I would also recommend getting a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker which many of our members find helps them get a good understanding of their diabetes and how to control it well 🙂

Please feel free to ask any questions you may have and we will do our best to help! 🙂

Hello Nettie, welcome. Time to go back to your GP or DSN methinks. It may well be that you need a bit of chemical help to reduce your levels.

Is weight a factor for you? It certainly was for me... after the first 4 stone came off, and with a bit of help from metformin, my HbA1c was just within non-diabetic range. 🙂

Welcome to the forum NettieH 🙂

thx all

Hello all
Yes weight is a factor. Lost 26lb so far and it was helping.
I do my tests as soon as I wake up before getting out of bed and always at least two hours after eating...
Thanks for your help all some good pointers for me 🙂
Will have to go and see the diabetic nurse I think but I will certainly look at carb intake etc.

Oh and thanks for the lovely welcome too

It's nice to be welcomed and have some really helpful responses

You're very welcome Nettie 🙂 Why not join in with our Weight Loss section also for some great sujpport in your weight-reducing efforts? 🙂 Well done on your loss of 26 pounds, that's terrific!

Wow! Another 2 lbs and you will hit the 2-stone mark. I bet you feel much better in yourself, and people are probably starting to notice. If you need help and support to lose more, do consider weight loss clubs. I chose Slimming World (the Original/Red plan is fairly low-carb) when I first had to start metformin, and lost 6 stone in 60 weeks. It's the best fiver a week I ever spent.

Lee Lee you are amazing!
