Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I was only diagnosed last Friday so really haven't quite got my head round it all yet. I have been given about 8 pages of info and that is all - no help at all really. I don't know where to start. I am 73 and suffer from Polymyalgia Rhumatica (PMR) and take Steroids for the pain, and am desparately trying to lose weight. I lost 1 stone before taking the Steroids and have managed to lose almost 10 in the 9 weeks I've been on them. I don't really know what else I can cut down on to help both the weight loss and the diabetes.

I've been told to diet until Christmas and then to see the diabetic nurse. What else should I do - any advice would be helpful. A very confused jj0

Hi jj0, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. There is an awfull lot of information around, but some of the more trusted and recommended sources are Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter. The book Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker also comes highly recommended.

Regarding your diet, it's not necessarily a case of reducing the calories, but also selecting food that will have a steady release of energy and not cause your blood sugar levels to jump up and down. I would personally recommend the GL Diet (Glycaemic Load) - a good introduction is The GL Diet for Dummies. Ideally, you need to be able to test your blood sugar levels before and after eating so you can determine what you can tolerate well and what should be reduced or excluded from your diet. Also, if you are able, try and get some regular daily exercise. All these things will help reduce the amount of insulin your body produces which can be very beneficial when you are looking to lose weight.

Please ask any questions you may have - nothing is considered 'silly', if it confuses you or bothers you then let us know! 🙂
