Diagnosed July, entered remission, and now I'm finding high levels with finger test?

Hi,

So I'm still relatively new here and to diabetes. I turned 40 in March and had a MOT at the GP in July when my type 2 diabetes was found.

Since then I've gotten more exercise , eaten healthier, and stopped drinking (as I had liver issues and high cholesterol).

Last Wednesday I had a hospital check up and my diabetes HbA1c was 38, and confirmed to be in remission !! I was very pleased obviously. However irony and ironies the very day I went to the hospital I tested by blood and it was 10mmol/L.

This was actually the very first what I would diabetic reading I'd observed in the months since being diagnosed. The next day it returned to normal and I ran out of test strips.

I've just picked some more up today and tested myself at 17:41 and it was after calling at the pharmacy (ate around 2pm) and it was 7.2 mmol/L. Still high I think? I tested it again at 18:17 just to be sure and it was down to 5.6 mmol/L back to normal levels. I ate my evening meal (mushy peas and one piece of fish) about 18:20 then tested it again at 19:50 (90 mins later) - now it's shot up 12.4! I've never seen this level before.

I've been feeling a little ill since last week (just before I went to the hospital) and I know having a cold etc can cause some odd effects with insulin in the body but would the massive swings here and on the back of being in remission be something it could cause? I'm really worried as I haven't been doing anything differently so to have a remission HbA1c then be all over like is really throwing me?

Anyone able to offer any thoughts on this please?

I wouldn't risk mushy peas. How is your liver now? I'm very interested in livers, mine's had it. 🙂 Did the fish have batter on it?
 
Normal, mostly. The ALT level was 41 (upper reference range is 40) so it's a little out but the levels were 4x normal (this is still considered mild) so almost fully healthy again at least on the blood results. I haven't had a biopsy to see the damage but an ultrasound six weeks ago confirmed fatty liver. I did drink a lot but now drink zero (I will break for xmas but not like I used to).

I was just looking at the mushy peas - you're right they're pretty carby..... The fish did have batter aye. Both were not "great" things but I have been completely resistant to these before - could it be that my tolerance has slipped?

I didn't really drink as such, my defunct liver is caused by pigging out for decades. It was 'fatty liver' for ages then all of a sudden I'm doomed. I told the specialist "I just had a fatty liver, I know lots of people with fatty livers' :( She said I'm just unlucky. :confused:

Not sure what's caused your sudden rise after foods you're usually used to. Half of this diabetes lark is a mystery to me.
 
I was referred to the lipid clinic due to mega high levels of triglycerides (8x normal) so they ran a full workup on my liver again and I think they just run the HbA1c by default too. I aren't sure what's standard - take the photos to the GP and ask for one they might play ball 🙂

I'm wondering if I'm a little ill still. My throat is sore and I'm feeling a bit worn, and as I understand it stress hormones can effect other hormones such as insulin....maybe it's that?
 
Remission or have you just got it under control! You will find debates about this on other threads.

7's after eating not a problem particularly if it comes back down again within a couple of hours. The 12.4 could easily be due the fish & peas. Next time try a lightly battered fish and a tiny portion of chips and see what happens. Works for me. People say that when you are ill your BG can go up but I found the opposite. All that shows is that people are different and you will eventually work out where you fit into the picture.

Not sure, just that the consultant at St James' Leeds said it was the case, re: remission. To be honest I thought it made sense as I had been, perhaps not particularly responsibly, been trying to push my blood sugar levels by eating meals I would consider bad and it was doing ok. For example, I would have a reading of 5.1 mmol/L then eat a huge mixed kebab, with sides, and it would only go up to 5.7 mmol/L. Prior to that I wasn't doing this, and I was having very low carb meals and my readings would sometimes go down after a meal not up.

Anyway, I'll monitor it a lot over the coming days perhaps it's just an anomaly due to illness or perhaps I was just lucky over the past few months? It's interesting that some people have the opposite reaction to myself re BG.

It seems like the illness and the particular nature of the carbs in the meal just combined to give a big spike to me.

Looks like you are a bit of a numbers person, which is a great help in monitoring and managing diabetes.

Keep a close eye on it, just to make sure if isn’t your diabetes that is changing the rules and moving the goalposts!

Thanks. I'm going to avoid that combination for a while and see how it goes. Starting to feel better now hopefully my levels stabilise.
