Hi
diagnosed about five weeks ago...started mid June with a very severe cellulitis infection...followed by a DVT...high blood pressure...diabetes...endometrial biopsy ( still waiting for results )...taking Metformin 500 mgs twice daily ( and other meds) which has greatly reduced my appetite...since starting the Metformin no real interest in food...not even cooking...only just starting to understand what I should be eating...have to admit I am struggling...

Hi Bubbsie, welcome to the forum.... Sorry to hear about the DX

As far as what to eat, if to cut or reduce the carbs, things like Bread, pasta, rice, cereals & startchy vegetables like potatoes.... In fact if it's "green" & grown above ground then it's good. Avoid processed foods (particularly diet foods) as these all have hidden carbs.

Please think positively, have a positive attitude, easy for me to say but I have been there (struggling) so you are not alone, in fact this whole community is about shared experiences; we help & encourage eachother.on a daily basis.

Welcome to the friendly zone Bubbsie. This is the place to get support and answers on the Diabetes front. There is someone out there with an answer to nearly every question we have and most people are willing to share their experiences. Your mind must be in meltdown at present so please try to take care of yourself. I know it is hard dealing with your Diabetes diagnosis as well as waiting on your Biopsy results. Had the same issue myself and it was a worrying wait. As they say, knowledge is power, and in this instance the more you learn, the more you can help yourself to feel well and make some adjustments to stay that way. All the best

Hi Bubbsie,
Welcome to this brilliant forum!
It sounds like you have a lot going on, and diabetes is a huge shock!
However it is completely achievable to live a normal life with this condition. The advice above is pretty spot on 🙂
It may be worth looking into getting a glucose meter, if you haven't been provided with one, and type 2s are often not unfortunately. A lot of people on here use the Codefree meter, as it's the cheapest one to self fund. Testing will help you gauge your own BG levels and what foods affect you in which way.
I think in the Newbie section there's a thread about things newly diagnosed people might find helpful.
Everyone here is really lovely, so ask lots of questions 🙂

Martin thank you for the advice...for some reason I was reluctant to say 'I am diabetic'...sounds ridiculous but its taken me a while...getting myself organised now...glucose meter ordered...and paying attention to what I am eating...blood sugar was 17 at the start...coming down slowly...this morning 9.1...so must be doing something right...hoping once steered in the right direction will be able to reduce that further...booked on a DESMOND course for November...

Thank you... I have so many questions...only posted last night and surprised at the response so far...good to feel supported without judgement or disapproval...sure I will make good progress now I am on this forum...

Hi Bubbsie
I still find it difficult to say I am diabetic and I'm a couple of years in, sounds weird but saying that feels like I'm saying its a part of me and I still feel like it's something that happened to me rather than something I am. It takes a while, and everyone deals with things differently. The shock of it all is much worse than the reality though I think. Give yourself time to adjust its a rollercoaster at first, then soon it's just a waltzer, and before you know it it's a gentle seesaw (honest 🙂).

Thank you...yes I have a lot going on at the moment...as someone who rarely went to their GP been difficult to have so much happen at once...surgery appointments...hospital...clinics...eye screening and so on...I have a glucose meter arriving today so will be able to start testing...and such a relief to finally 'speak' to others who know exactly what you are going through...

Thank you...exactly how I feel...as a 'professional' so used to being a hand holder...as opposed to needing my hand held...disappointed its taken several weeks for me to accept the diagnosis...and realise how carefully I have to consider my diet...my lifestyle...I have other health issues ( all new diagnosis) so perhaps haven't given the diabetes my full attention yet...looking forward to correcting that...glucose meter and a fantastic book on their way...so getting organised...wish I'd found this forum sooner...

Hi Bubbsie. Getting organised is key to success and even modest changes to your diet and lifestyle can have a big impact on your diabetes. This forum has been a Godsend to me in terms of education and resources. If there's anything I can help with...just ask.

Hi Bubbsie and welcome.🙂 Sounds like you've been feeling like I did after I was diagnosed. It's only natural. Things do get better tho, and it sounds like you're already making small changes and seeing improvements. 🙂 As others have said, this forum is a godsend. I don't know what I'd do without it! 😛

Thanks...managing with Metformin and adjusting my diet and attempting to be more active...don't believe my GP's surgery has a diabetes nurse...so just been given the medication and advised to buy book 'Carbs and Calories'...no idea what HbA1c means...only told my blood sugars were at 17 and need to reduce them...although booked on a DESMOND course mid November...chose that date have other issues going on...and needed a break from continuous appointments...

Thanks ...Last couple of days have been the worst...had to deal with other health issues which needed urgent treatment...so hadn't been able to give the diabetes my full attention...now those are not a priority suddenly I needed to address my diabetes and it hit me hard...had a few 'down' days...but feeling more positive particularly since posting on the forum...

Some days are better than others Bubbsie. Hope this is a good one 🙂

If anyone makes you feel like this then it's time to move on..... We just got Diabetes, plain & simple, it's part of our life now.... Perversely (in my case) many positives came out of it though I still wish that I had paid attention to my nutrition 30+ years ago.

Like you l was diagnosed a few weeks ago and am struggling. With other medical issues and medication l struggle but am determined to sort it out. Since being on Metformin my appetite has gone down the pan, food does not taste as it used to, but l am learning things each day so keep going lots of good advice on here

Hi grange very similar to my own circumstances...prior to the middle of June this year rarely saw a doctor and when feeling unwell reluctant to take so much as a paracetamol ...in fact wasn't even registered with a GP...then at the start dealing with the initial complaints ( cellulitis...DVT...etc...)...then the diabetes arrived...

Hi grange...very similar circumstances to my own...rarely saw a doctor...when feeling unwell reluctant to take so much as a paracetamol...then health issues began mid-June this year...one by one they arrived...and now on Metformin...Warfarin...Ramipril...then the diabetes diagnosis...to be honest I had no idea how serious it was...and could be...like you on Metformin...little appetite...not much real interest in food...eating because I need to...on a positive note my weight is dropping...everyone says I look better & younger than I have done for years...however although I have picked myself up a little the prospect of managing this condition for life is daunting...and I am still struggling somewhat...but have made a start with the help of some good reading and this forum...Thank you for your attention...helps a great deal...and good to hear from you...

Hi Bloden...already noticing some changes in the last few days...and in particular my attitude has changed...realised I can make a difference by adjusting my lifestyle and diet...and I agree wholeheartedly this forum is a 'godsend'...changing things bit by bit...even resolved to give up the smoking...

Agree 100%...finding so many positives myself...weight dropping...paying attention to my own health...and wish I had watched my own diet & nutrition more closely...so resolved to try and make some headway from now on...thank you (again)...
