Hi all,
After watching the news they mentioned that they need diabetes specialists in Pakistan. I was wondering if there was any way we could send insulin over there and meters etc - does anyone know?🙂Bev

Don't know, but it's a good idea - I've got a spare meter knocking around, plus some soon-to-be-out of date ketostix (I got me an Optium Exceed thingy now!). I'd love for them to go somewhere useful!

Or support any agency / charity providing medical aid to Pakistan, mentioning that you particularly want to help people with diabetes, although most agencies are pretty good at helping where / who the need is greatest.
Simplest way is to support DEC (Disasters Emergency Committee) which is collecting money for the floods appeal.

Money is often the easiest thing both to give and for agencies / charities to use, as it's cheap & easy to transport, and needed items can be bought locally, instead of being transported from Europe.
I agree with Bev - do something.

Hi Copepod, I do agree with what you have said - but do you think there is actually any insulin over there? I dont mind giving money - but would like to feel that at least it is spent on insulin etc. On the news last night it said that a doctor who had been treating children had bought some supplies himself as he wasnt prepared to let them go without - but that doesnt necessarily mean that there is even any insulin available.😱🙂Bev

Yes, I do trust the local agencies to source the large amounts of medication required - eg from neighbouring India. Sending lots of small packets is more likely to overload local postal and medical services, particularly in this immediate post flood period.

Forgive me if my understanding of the subject isnt spot on, but arent supplies difficult in India as well? Im only thinking that from the Dream Trust info I know of, a sponsor a diabetic girl in India who doesnt have access to regular supplies....? Not sure?

So are they in a stable enough situation themselves to offer that kind of logistical support?

(sorry, dont want to divert the thread theme- I know we have Dream Trust threads)

I think the problems in India are more the money to pay for insulin, than the insulin itself, compounded by different values places on the lives of girls and boys in some places.
India was just an example of a neighbouring country, but others nearby eg Malaysia would also be good sources of supplies, and that's not in flood zone.

Yes thats very true I think, reminds me of some of the info on India I have read.

Its very sad to think of all the people, kids and adults who are affected by this. I know what you mean though, Bev- I wish there was some sort of diabetic related "gesture" we could do?

I wonder if there is one those 'justgiving' things set up - I am not great with these things so wouldnt know where to look.🙂Bev

Novo got a lot of stick over withdrawing some insulins from Greece for a couple of weeks recently so I think its good to see that they have donated 1,000,000 Danish Kroner to Pakistan.
Half of it was given to their affiliate in Pakistan to distribute 20,000 vials of insulin. The other half was as money given to the Danish Red Cross, the press report suggests that the money will be more useful initially.

Sounds a very pragmatic approach by Novo - all credit to the company. Thanks for posting the news, Helen.
