Just read an article about a third of type2 diabetics not taking their medication. Metformin being the main protagonist.
This sort of journalism alienates all diabetics to a lot of the public who think it is a self inflicted illness.
How any one can say this is the same as proving there is a Loch Ness monster.
How would anyone know who was and wasn’t taking their medication.

Gutter Press now starting to paint us as some undesirable subgroup akin to lepers of old.
Although I have only been a daibetic for some 3 months, the level of general ignorance both in the health professional sphere and the public at large is beginning to P*** me off big style.
I am a human being who happens to have a chronic condition. I am not some lazy fat individual who brought this on myself and neither are others I know with diabetes.
How to fight Back?
Maybe DUK should challenge this article and others like it.
I do not believe in passive acceptance.

I’d be interested in seeing the article. Anyone got the link please?

A quick google suggests the Daily Fail seems to have got hold of a research report from Univesrsity of Leicester, here.

Daily Mail article here. Though they seem to be quoting University of Surrey research. I didn't think this was in their usual Diabetes bashing vein, it stresses it's because the side effects of Metformin are so awful, and urges health care professionals to be aware and prescribe alternative meds.

Read some of the comments on that page...... Infuriating

Thanks Robin.

I don’t necessarily see this as a diabetic bashing article. It’s revealing to the public just how awful the side effects of metformin can be for some people and why they shun the meds as a result.
It’s well known that there’s enormous medication wastage across all spectrums of illness in the UK and anyone having problems with Metfartin should get back to the docs. I certainly did and I’m one of the guilty who didn’t take it.

Having read it Amigo I would tend to agree with you

My intention was to say print anything about diabetes! Then read the comments! That’s who I meant are doing the bashing sorry if I confused anyone. Not interested in what the papers say it’s the general public who count.

I agree with Amigo, it’s not really bashing folk with diabetes. And whichever way you look at it, it’s likely to be true. It doesn’t matter what medication is prescribed for a chronic condition, some people won’t bother. Metfartin makes it easy for non compliers because of its side effects. So what if you lose a foot or your sight, those nice people at DWP will give you money.

Most of the comments were reasonable, but you’ll always get two or three that will have a go at causing offence. It’s ever the way, particularly on the Daily Fail site.
