Hi all ..I am hoping you can help me ..

I have been feeling pretty rough for several months but nothing really wrong with me .. just exhausted and washed out most of the time ..

I decided to go to my useless in past doctor as the pharmacist was fed up of giving me thrush medication ..

He looked at my records and decided the thrush was due to over use of antibiotic .. I have had numerous infected skin problems .. nothing serious but lumps under the skin and infected lesions ... he sent me on my way with more antibiotic for a insect bite which isnt going away and 4 weeks worth of thrush medication..I pressed him for a "diabetes" test as the pharmacist suggested i get checked out and he reluctantly said to give a urine sample to the receptionist and ask for a "sugar test"

Went back a fortnight ago , as now have a rash on my chest and insect bite still there and itchy bits .. he gave me antibiotic and steroid cream and said the urine test was "normal"

Now , I am so itchy I could scream , feel so tired and insect bite still there ..

I just wanted to ask advice , I am paranoid or hypochondraic to think maybe its diabetes .. has anyone else had problems with doctors ?

To add I am also about 3 stone overweight :(

oh and The doctors asked me if I go for wee alot .. well whats ALOT ..

During the day I can go 3 hours ..
At night , I get up at least twice normally every 2 hours ..

I know you shouldnt self diagnose but my doctors is useless !!
( had a lump on my breast last year and he didnt ever examine me, asked me what it looked like and gave me antibiotics .. it was a blocked milk duct and it cleared but still )

Hi Karen and welcome to the forums. I'm sorry you seem to be being given the run around from your doc. From the symptoms you mention you could well have diabetes. Recurring thrush and other infections can be a sign of high blood sugar levels, as can lesions and skin infections as well as the constant tiredness.

I'm disappointed that your doc just tested a urine sample. It's not a very accurate way to check for diabetes at all. If I was you I would make another appointment and ask for blood tests as this is what needs to be done to give an acurate diagnosis. It's not as though diabetes is rare or unusual. I hope you get a sensible answer from him soon. If not, would it be possible to change your doctor? XXXXX

Hi Karen and welcome to the forums.

Thrush can be caused by an overuse of antibiotics but it is more common in people with diabetes which is why the pharmacist suggested you be tested for diabetes.

I am not a Dr but from what I have read the level at which glucose leaks into urine varies from person to person and for many it is over 10mmol, and as such isn't too good as a diagnostic tool. Certainly you could have a fastiing blood sugar above 6 and you would have no sugar in your urine. If you look at the attached link you will see why I say 6 it is about screening for diabetes.

If I was you I would ask your Dr if you could have a fasting or random blood sugar test, or check your local chemists as some will test you.

I certainly don't think that you are being paranoid - infections that don't clear up and recurrent thrush are common symptoms of undiagnosed or uncontrolled diabetes.

Hello Karen, ive just been diagnosed with type 2. but thinking about it i'd felt tired for weeks and just put it down to extra hours at work, i also had recurring bouts of itchiness that made me want to kill. I think the thirst and weeing thing crept up on me slowly but in the end i could've drunk from the flower vase and as fast as it went in it came out, it was very obvious something was up so i went to Lloyds and had a free glucose check which was 27.4 after that i went straight to the doctors, just for the record i'm also 3stone overweight.

Has usual same symptoms can be many things...

Problem being if they did a diabetic test at the moment it may not be accurate..

It may show raised blood glucose levels, but the question would be is it raised BG causing the infections or is the infections causing the raised blood glucose levels?

For diagnoses purposes the Urine test isn't far off, a clear urine test would indicate that A, you haven't got BG's levels in the diabetic range, and that your BG's isn't getting into these ranges for any period of time..

You be suprised how high a non-diabetic BG can spike after a heavy carb meal!

How ever you do need to go back to docs, and ask for two things,,

To have your thyroid check, as itchy skins, tirdness and weight gain are symptoms assoicated with an underactive thyroid.. A while he's at it to check HbA1c levels just incase your pre-diabetic

You also need to ask to be referred to a skin specialiest, so that it can be investigated probably to why you are constantly getting skin infections..

It maybe that you have a skin yeast such as the candia (sp) that is the underlying cause which would also explain the thrush infections..

But if you feel that your GP is useless, you may fair better by changing to a different GP either within your own surgery or transfering to another practice completely

I'm certainly no expert but am a tad surprised that a non-diabetic's BG would increase should they be ill or have an infection. I do know they can go up after a meal, and have even experimented by testing everyone who agreed round a friend's dinner table once, after we'd all eaten about a 5 course meal. The only person who went anywhere over about 7 was me. In any event I do agree that up to 2 or 3 hours after a heavy meal, wouldn't be the right timing for a test anyway.

And surely your renal threshold can falsely subdue (or worsen) the results of a urine glucose check?

Or have I mis-remembered that?

I wonder whether the GP meant you to give a urine sample AND have a blood test but then got lazy and just went with the urine sample results?

As others have said, you really need a blood glucose test to pin-point whether your symptoms are due to diabetes or not. Before my diagnosis I too had cases of fungal infections, poor healing and tiredness. I just wish I'd put it all together earlier because I might have avoided some of my more permanent problems (I have numbness in the feet and fingers ... not too bad, but rather irritating at times!)

Knock your GP's door down and get him/her to do his/her job properly!😡

Hi Karen, welcome to the forum 🙂 Very sorry to hear all you have been going through. I do think that you need to ask for a blood test because if it is diabetes you need to start receiving treatment so that you can begin feeling better now. You have reported a number of symptoms, not just the thrush, so I think it is far from unreasonable that you should request a definitive test for diabetes. If it isn't diabetes then the doctor can investigate other possibilities. A random urine test may not reveal the true situation for the reasons already mentioned, just as a random blood test may show as being in normal range - the blood sugar fluctuates throughout the day, so at least two random tests would need to be done.

I would back the suggestion that you see another doctor about this. Is there another doctor at the same practice that you can ask to see, or is there a doctor that is recommended by one of your friends? You shouldn't have to live with such discomforts and worries, so please press your case and/or get a second opinion as soon as you can 🙂 Good luck and let us know how things go!

A diagnosis of diabetes can only be made with a blood test, not a urine test.

While you're waiting to get a blood test at GP, you might like to look at The Weight Loss Group section of this messageboard, as losing 3 stones is a challenge, but worthwhile for so many reasons, not just diabetes related.

Welcome to the forums KarenTerry 🙂

Hi Karen
I had a really itchy rash 10 months before I was diagnosed , also had skin infections over a number of years.
BG's were normal and I was referred to a skin specialist at one point because it was so bad. I was also tired all the time....
Throughout this time I was very overweight and eating loads of sugar and carbs to keep going.

I do wonder now if I had changed my diet then as drastically as I have now if the diabetes would have held off...just a thought !
agree with others though - seek a blood test but start losing weight and exercising now .
