I have just been told after getting bloods taken, that I have high blood cholesterol and low blood sodium. This was passed on from the doctors receptionist, when I asked what this meant all she said was something to do with too much water!.

Any help would be appreciated

Hi Tempy, I think it is inappropriate for a receptionist to pass this sort of info when really not trained to interpret these results or pass you on to someone trained to help. I am lucky with my GP surgery in that practice nurses do the phones on rota so this is avoided. I hope that you sort this one out.

Welcome to the forum @Tempy

Sorry to hear you’ve had some results from your surgery that weren’t explained to you very clearly.

Has a follow-up appointment been booked for you to see a practice nurse or GP? Were the blood checks you had done part of routine screening? Or because you have been experiencing some symptoms of some sort?

Blood cholesterol is to do with fats in the bloodstream, and lots of research suggests people with diabetes need to be careful about cholesterol levels because we have a higher than average risk of various heart problems.

Blood sodium is to to with the electrolytes in your bloodstream, which ideally should be kept in balance.

If you don’t have a follow-up appointment booked to discuss your results, perhaps you could book a phone call or e-consult to put your mind at rest?

Thank you so much for your replies, I feel I have just been left in limbo since my diagnoses. I have been to the doctor 3 times since January due to my weight loss, I have lost nearly 4st since September I was 11st 12lb and I am now down to 7st 4lb. At one point the doctor turned round and asked me was I not trying to lose weight, I explained it was them that put me on a low carb diet, I don’t really understand about the high blood cholesterol as I don’t smoke, drink or eat fatty foods. I have been given an appointment to attend the phlebotomy clinic for more bloods to be taken, which I will definitely ask what it is they are checking, I just feel a bit confused about what I am supposed to be doing, at the moment I am taking Metformin 1G modified-release tablets. Again thank you for you reply, kind regards Tempy
