Diabetic reviews during Coronavirus

I am a bit alarmed at what I see as a glaring inconsistency in the approach of Health Centres and clinics at this time.
I originally had an appointment for blood samples on 23rd March, to be followed up by my review on 31st March. Around the middle of March it was made public that a member of the medical staff ( I believe one of the doctors) had tested positive for Coronavirus and that the centre was closed for ‘deep cleaning’. Patients were informed that, on no account should anyone visit the centre and that anyone with appointments would be contacted in due course. I obviously did not attend for my blood samples and assumed I would be contacted in due course when things are back to normal. Meanwhile, it came to light that another of the doctors had tested positive.
I was surprised to get a call from the centre at the end of March pointing out that I had not kept my first appointment. I explained that I did not attend because of the earlier information given by the centre. I was told, with apologies, that there had been inconsistencies in communication with patients and the public and that my blood sample appointment was now rescheduled for Friday 10th April, with specific instructions about procedures, like not entering the building but to call from outside and to wait for a staff member to greet me etc.
I mentioned this to my daughter, who is a GP in a practice in another town and she expressed some doubt and alarm about what I had told her as it appeared, in her opinion, to contradict NHS guidelines. After talking to colleagues, she told me that, in her practice, patients no longer attended the building, all contact was by telephone and that ‘non urgent’ routine appointments such as chronic illness monitoring and reviews would cease till things are back to normal. She strongly advised me to contact my centre and cancel the appointment and to explain that I was self isolating and anxious about attending. I did that this morning, saying that I was in good health, self testing and BG numbers good, and that I would rearrange an appointment in the future. That was fine and my request noted and accepted.
I must say that, normally, my health centre is very efficient and I have no qualms about my dealings with it, but, in this uncertain time, I am confused at this lack of inconsistency. I would have thought that every centre would have clear guidelines and strict instructions on procedures, with no room for discretion.

One of our local GP practices is now using the local drive through Costa to take pinprick blood samples for patients on such medications as Warfarin who need regular checks. Minimal contact, arm stuck out of car finger prick test done in couple of minutes. Believed to be first in the country. They have two members of the Cornish Pirates rugby team to keep away those who are after a latte.. The pharmacy attached to this surgery also now has two burley players keeping the queues for prescriptions orderly.

I’m due my review this month. I haven’t had a reminder nor have I rang to make an appointment as at this time I don’t think it’s important. I’m quite “happy” with my diabetes and not concerned about anything, so I’ll just wait, likewise my annual sight test. As always, any worries, concerns or questions I may have at this time, I will email my DSN at the Diabetes Clinic or come on here to ask you lovely lot!

I cancelled my blood test and review for last month , I explained I was self isolating and would contact them for an appointment later on.
I have no idea what procedures are in place at my practice but I will only arrange a face to face appointment if absolutely necessary.
I am doing this to try and protect my 94 year old dad who I live with who is vulnerable.

I scrapped my bloods review I have access to DSN if needed.

My blood test and review are due at the end of May so I'll wait until later and then ring up my surgery, unless there is more info on their website. I normally take the bus to our local hospital for the blood test, but like @Browser and @eggyg, I'm happy with my numbers, I don't take D medication, so I'm not too concerned about postponing it and the review.

Mine was due last November. They've obviously overlooked me and I don't suppose I shall hear from them now so it's a good job I'm in denial. 🙂 I'm not worrying about it.

I am due a repeat stool test at the end of the month for a borderline result. 3 month Diabetes check in May. Expecting neither to go ahead.

So far I have missed (1) a cancelled consultant diabetic appointment (2) a cancelled CT scan with contrast study of my pancreas to exclude the possibility of pancreatic cancer (3) a colonoscopy to exclude the possibility of bowel cancer due to ulcerative colitis (4) a follow up neurological appointment in Liverpool, basically to find out how long I will live.

You know which is the least important in my thinking? The diabetic appointment. Why? because it's not a big deal. It doesn't define me. Never has. And my care of diabetes is entirely down to me. Everything else is out of my control.

I had my review with the DSN over the telephone and she said we couldn’t go ahead with an HBA1C due to not been able to have face to face contact. That aspect is just delayed.

She also mentioned that the team are on Skelton staff because a lot of the DSNs have been redeployed.

My son had his moved to phone too, but they accessed pump downloads and dexcom data beforehand so was a fair amount to talk though, just no HbA1c of course and his annual bloods also due had to be put on hold.

Mine was due end of March. When I called mid March they said they weren’t taking routine appointments this week but call back next week and see where things are. Well things got a bit crazy the next week so I’ve not called back I figured they’d call me when I can go in. I did go and pick up a prescription last week and it said to only go into the building if you have spoken to a gp telling you to enter. Our diabetes nurse called my mum at coupe of weeks ago to congratulate her on her numbers and said she thought this would all be over in 8 weeks, let’s hope so!

Sorry to hear about this @Browser

I was under the impression that most regular appointments have been cancelled, but I’ve also separately heard from paediatric diabetes clinics who were still running (I think!)

The Diabetes UK page certainly suggests that most routine GP appointments and clinics are likely to be cancelled

Thanks for the info, Mike.
