Hi folks, thought I'd share something that pleasantly surprised me yesterday..

When I have my annual review I normally have to scribble down my results or persuade the doctor to print them out so I can take them home and compare them with the previous year's results, but this year is different..

Yesterday was blood-taking day, my review is next week, but they gave me a comprehensive printout of all the D related results since diagnosis without me even asking. This included comments and concerns that I'd voiced over the years, drugs, dosages, weight and tickle-test results on my feet. I also got a sheet with common concerns about diabetes with a tick-box by each one to indicate that I'd like to discuss them with the doctor.

I thought this was brilliant and with their positive attitude towards self-testing and readiness to issue test strips I'm very glad to be a patient of Eldene Surgery in Swindon 🙂
 
That's terrific - sounds to me like 'best practice', that all should observe! 🙂 I've often found it annoying that, when I moved to my current clinic, they gave me a booklet to record all my 'numbers' in, but then when I have a review they are very reluctant to give out any of them - I have to specifically mention each one and ask what the latest result is!

I hope my clinic/surgery decide to start doing this also, it would be interesting to look back over the past 5 years 🙂
 
Abosulutely Northie, we need knowledge to act and change, seems silly *not* to inform patients about this stuff.
 
Sounds an excellent approach 🙂

Some of the more old fashioned doctors don't like to give patients their own data, heaven forbid that a patient might actually be intelligent enough to understand it!
 
At the Living with diabetes day at Reading they said that there is a move afoot to change the way the annual review is done. In West Berkshire they will get the person in to have all the tests done, blood, feet etc. They will then get all the results and have a chance to look at them before they see the doctor who will be willing to discuss anything that they want to ask about from the information that they have had. Sounds like a good plan and on the lines of what you have had. I was not surprised to hear that this is not on the cards for where I live. Guess it costs money :( It was suggested that we should all ask when our surgeries are going to take it on. We should also go armed with the 15 essential tests that we can expect to have. I'm going to risk being even more unpopular with them and do this in December when I have my review. Maybe I should say if[/B]?
