After Dawson Silenzi was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes three years ago he started giving himself insulin injections four times a day.

The 13-year-old had never shown interest in having an insulin pump because of the tubes attached to them, and despite the fact that they make controlling diabetes easier.

Things for Dawson have changed, however.

In late July, he became the first person at the Niagara Diabetes Centre to use the new Omni Pod insulin pump.

?It gives me freedom,? he said. ?I don?t have to calculate how many carbs I ate and how much insulin I need because it does it for me.?

Dawson?s registered nurse at the diabetes clinic in Welland, Cheryl Ruzgys, told him about the new tubeless insulin pump. He was on board immediately.
