Diabetic Neuropathy

Help! Newbie here with first post. (Insulin dependant, Type 2)

For the last two years I have suffered every 4 to 8 weeks with a pain either in a foot or lower leg. The pain is like someone sticking a pin in my skin and then sending a tiny, but noticeable electric shock down the pin. It lasts a second or two and happens every minute or two for between 24 and 48 hrs. Usually starts in the early hours of the morning and also starts very mild like a tiny itch before building up to the pin/shock pain described. I have been on two types of anti-depressants to stop it, but little effect. This week though, it has happened three times - causing discomfort and a lack of sleep.

Now, I do also have a trapped nerve/bulging disc in lower back - which a physio said could be causing the symptoms rather than the Neuropathy.

So...

1. Does anyone suffer with similar issues as the pin/shock pain?
2. Does anyone have a great way of easing it?
3. How do you cope with lack of sleep?
4.. Any ideas/ Offers or help?
5. I am at GPs on Monday - what should I ask?

Thank you all in advance.

I don't suffer from it but having been married to a bloke who had a bulging disc to the degree it almost killed one branch of his sciatic nerve I'd say get that thing sorted ASAP as an urgent priority. You need physio and Oh yes - it will hurt!! and if you can't get it quickly via the NHS - then pay for it. Money is no good to anyone if they're crippled for the rest of their lives.

Sorry to hear you're going through this. I have restless leg syndrome so not the same, but I can relate a little to feeling deeply uncomfortable and finding it hard to sleep.
I wonder if your symptoms are similar to others with neuropathy? Or if it is indeed something to do with your trapped nerve/bulging disc.
It's good you are going to see your GP, just be honest with them and let them know the extent it's impacting you. Hope they can help quickly!

You do need to get a proper diagnosis but magnesium gel applied to the area can sometimes help.
Sleeping may be helped by herbal Nytol so you could ask your pharmacist if it is OK with other meds you are taking.
