Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
hi

I came home from holiday today to a letter regarding my routine eye scan. It said I have the above. I have type 2 and have had it for over 20 years. I have noticed my eyesight getting worse ( my previous scan showed nothing) . I have always had floaters and these seemed to be more irritating than usual. Also I have a curious shape in my left eye at one side that flashes when I blink. I've had this before but usually the flashes go away. My diabetes is well controlled and I swim walk and am generally active. My weight and diet is pretty good too. I am thinking what have I done to deserve this? Has anyone any comforting words or advice. I'm waiting for my hospital appt. and am seeing my optician next week. Thanks

Hi Andrewaa, I also have this, although to date it hasn't affected my sight or required any treatment, just close monitoring. The good news is that there are some excellent and very effective treatments available, and as you attend your regular scans it's likely this has been caught at an early stage 🙂 Any thing to do with the eyes sounds scary, but I am always reassured by the fact that many of our members have had these treatments and they are never as bad as you might imagine! I have had a tiny bit of lasering, but that's it over the past 6-7 years - hopefully, your problems will not require much, if any treatment. Good luck with the appointment, and let us know how you get on 🙂

Thanks Northerner some reasuring advice. I just want to get my appointment sorted out and get started!

Andrew - when you mentioned "flashes" - are you having "flashing lights." The reason I ask if that my friend's husband had this in addition to a shadow across his eye where he could not see properly and he had a detached retina. My friend had flashing lights and went to the Eye Hospital in a panic and it was just eye strain. It is sometimes worth a visit to an Eye Hospital to check it out as detached retinas need quick treatment. I don't want to worry you unnecessarily and I am not suggesting it is that, but just a thought. Optician should sort out what it is though if you are going soon.

I also had flashes in one eye & it turned out to be optic neuritis, which cleared up on it's own.
