I'm a T2, diagnosed 7 yrs ago. Since then have gained several stones, lost a stone or two and put them back on, plus more. Can't face fruit and veg, (though I do force veg down almost every day) and can only seem to eat bread, cakes, biscuits at the moment. I get very hungry at lunch time and would prefer to have my main meal then, but it's only possible on a Sunday. I don't like meat, quorn, lentils or fish so it's difficult to know what to eat. I've recently read that it's possible to stop a 'diabetic binge' by drinking orange juice before eating. Does anyone agree? Or can you suggest other ways of putting myself off carbs please?
 
Hi and welcome to the forum. Do you test your blood glucose levels? That concentrates my mind! :D
 
Bread, cakes & biscuits are full of sugar & carbs and will send you blood sugars through the roof. Testing is very important to make sure what you're eating isn't doing you any harm. Most people here use the SD Codefree available from Amazon or Homehealth. Oh, and welcome to the forum.:D
 
Might be a good idea to get a test meter. Would your diabetic nurse let you have one on prescription? I have to self fund with a SD Codefree. The strips are about £8 for 50. They're the cheapest ones around.

Thankyou for your welcome. As for your reply, sadly I know all about nutrition and what carbs do
 
(I used to teach nutrition to ante-natal classes) but unfortunately it's an addiction, coupled with severe depression and, I'm sure, not helped by strong anti-depressants which virtually knock me out and leave me unable to walk far. Not good for someone who has to help their husband look after livestock! (Usually in PJ's and wellies).

I'll ask my nurse, although they've said I don't need to test at home as my levels have mostly been ok - probably not ok now since I've given up salad and fruit, but most food makes me feel nauseas anyway at the mo.
 
I'm going to get some orange juice tomorrow and try that before eating lunch, to see if it helps.
 
I would look to see the carb content of the Orange juice. I would imagine it has more than the cake. Perhaps try eating a whole orange instead?
 
Yeah - shedload of carbs in orange juice unfortunately.

Thing is though - it isn't the juice that stops you eating - it's the fact your tum is full. So - water's also brilliant at doing it!

Of course - it could be anything with as few carbs as possible. Was just plumping for something entirely carb and calorie free - which if you need to lose weight too, might just help!

Binge eating is rarely about the actual food, just like starvation is rarely about food. As the owner of a defeated (mostly) eating disorder I know that only too well. My flavour was starvation as it happens but it was nothing to do with food and everything to do with control. This diabetes lark makes it considerably more difficult to stop it rising from the ashes, I mean all this focus on food, weighing, portion control, makes the little control freak inside my head rub her hands in glee. Do you know why you do it? You don't have to answer that I'm just asking if you know why, because the only way to vanquish that dragon is to know where it comes from. You mentioned depression, sugar provides a very quick release of energy which can make people "feel" better temporarily, so there may be an element of self medication. Have you considered going back to your medical team and telling them the antidepressants aren't working, and letting them know you're struggling with food? I can be scathing about GPs (well mine anyway!) but they might be helpful in providing additional help. I really do hope you find your answers 🙂
 
Thanks all. I do have an appt. with doc next week so will speak to her again. I have times when I drink lots of water and other times not so much - it is quite filling but doesn't take away the need for sweet food. Someone suggested I drink my coffees with lots of sweetener to satisfy the craving, BUT, typical of me.........I hate sweet coffee and have never taken sugar with it!!! I'm completely odd.
 
Well, I made a low carb cheesecake last week and it was gorgeous and didn't affect my sugar levels. So it can be done.🙂
