Donned in her purple vest, Dayrah, a 4-month-old golden retriever, arrived Monday at her new home in Shelbyville, ready to work.

As a Diabetic Alert Dog, she is trained to detect the dangerously highs and lows of blood sugar in her new owner and handler Dereck Bly, 25.

The mild-mannered fox red retriever easily became acquainted with the new family of three after making the trip to Shelbyville from Virginia by plane, accompanied by her trainer/instructor Erin Gray with Service Dogs by Warren Retrievers.

Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 21, while serving in the Army National Guard, Bly served one tour in Afghanistan in infantry, before what they believe was a virus that triggered the disease.
