Hi I was diagnosed about 28 years ago at 42 after several years of symptoms and gestational diabeties There is history of diabetics early Type Twos in my mother and other family members though sparse as many didnt have children. I started diet and exercise, the metformin, stitagiptin and flozlim types, increased lack of control despite tight diet. Now on mixed insulin three times a day no diabetic pills and BS in range but still on tight diet and have to be careful about exercise. Seeking those like me and good advice for life on Mixed insulin 25/75 Hummalog. Hope this is okay post. Am. In Scotland.

Welcome to the forum Tag, from a fellow T2, who's 5 years in as of last month.

Hi there and welcome to the forum 🙂 (I'm a Scot too :D)

When you say you were diagnosed 28 years ago and increased lack of control has led to insulin, may I ask have they done any tests to confirm your Type? in many cases they determine its Type 2 due to age and weight etc and that's these days so they certainly probably wouldn't have tested back then to see because of your age at the time, if they haven't it may be worth asking if you could have a C-Peptide and GAD test done
xx

Hi and welcome from me too.

When you say you follow a strict diet, can you tell us the sort of things you eat.... ie what an average breakfast, lunch and tea comprises.
The reason I ask is that the NHS are notoriously bad for giving dietary advice to diabetics even today and the "eat well plate" with it's wholemeal/whole grain carbs is mostly promoted, when many Type 2 cannot cope with reduced portions of starchy carbs, even these so called healthy brown varieties.
If you are following a strict diet then you obviously have plenty of will power so perhaps a low carb, higher fat diet would be more enjoyable for you and reduce your need for insulin/medication.

On the other hand you may be a misdiagnosed diabetic and not actually be Type 2 but perhaps LADA (Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults) or Type 1.5, which is what @Kaylz is getting at about having C-peptide and GAD tests done. Diabetes is diagnosed with an HbA1c of 48 or over but that does not identify the type of diabetes. If you are not a child or young adult and particularly if you are overweight to a greater or lesser extent, then Type 2 is assumed and no further testing is done. Many GPs are still not aware that Type 1 diabetes can occur in mature adults and may not even have heard of LADA or Type 1.5, so when oral meds no longer work they just assume that the patient is becoming more resistant to their own insulin and need to inject instead of investigating further. Being Type 1 or 1.5 can entitle you to a different insulin regime which would mean that your diet needn't be so strict and you might qualify for other technological advances like monitoring systems and insulin pumps, so having the right diagnosis can make a significant difference.

A friend in Scotland was diagnosed Type 2 because of his age (BMI only about 22). After a battle with Metformin and his GP he was referred and diagnosed Type 1.5. Far fitter and energetic now on insulin.

Welcome to the forum @Tag

There are lots of friendly folk here, with literally decades of lived diabetes experience between us. It can be very helpful to share the ups and downs, the frustrations and often outright silliness that diabetes can throw our way with people who instinctively ‘get it’ 🙂
