Can I ask, is anyone doing anything for diabetes week (9 - 15 June)

I was thinking of doing a cake sale but thought it might be seen as a bit hypocritical (given some of the comments I get at work)

I know I probably won't raise much given I'm doing the Leeds well walk for DUK & people are sponsoring me but every little helps

Good luck with the cake sale. I get comments at work too about some of the things I have. Not sure if you can get low carb flour.

Hadn't planned anything for myself.

Well they've taken the sugar out of the kitchen so I can't have it in my coffee, never mess with a woman's coffee!!

.

you can get low carb flour on t'internet but its expensive.
It is heavily loaded with gluten so Dough Improver (from Lakeland) is also handy which contains lots of gluten.

There are also low carb recipes for bread etc

I did ask a few times in health food shops if they had gluten or gluten flour but they looked at me askance, all they have is gluten-free stuff.
I asked, well what do they do with all the gluten they take out of things ???

If you're set on doing food, why not do a BBQ with plenty of good quality meats and salads? No sugar, no carbs, plus if you time it for lunchtime, everyone is going to much rather want kebab skewers than miserable sandwiches! You can also make sure there's a veggie option with BBQ halloumi, peppers and mushrooms.

when the bakers was selling low carb bread at twice the price of full carb bread I asked if I could have the spare carbs for my husband. They didn't know what I was on about...

You ever watched a woman BBQ?
I don't think I'd be allowed

Laura I think its great that you're trying to raise money for diabetes during diabetes week. I dont think there is anything 'hypocritical' about selling cake (has the world gone mad?!). You can always use fructose as a substitute for sugar - tastes the same but has a low GI so doesnt wreak havoc with our dysfunctional pancreases 🙂

Also, great that you are doing the walk. I must have missed that thread. Do you have sponsorship page ? I would like to make a little donation.

But on the other hand, it does play havoc with your liver and there is a compelling school of thought that suggests fructose contributes quite a great deal to weight gain and cholesterol production. One of the major theories about why the US in particular has issues with obesity and high cholesterol is that in addition to the high calorie load eaten by the average American, the majority of sweetened processed food is sweetened with a fructose-based syrup.

Fair point but of course if anyone including non diabetics ate cake *every day* they'd end up with high cholesterol, weight gain and all sorts of health problems. The same goes for people who eat BBQs every day - they'd end up with an increased risk of cancer and other health problems. Having said that there is nothing wrong with having a BBQ every now and again in moderation and the same goes for a slice of cake.

All I was suggesting was that I dont think there is anything wrong with baking a few cakes to raise a bit of money - there are so many misinformed people who think we are a different species "who cant eat this, or cant eat that" and I think those attitudes perpetuate all the myths surrounding T1s as people who will end up with foot amputations and / or blind. Perhaps baking cakes could educate some of those people who clearly need a bit of educating. On a slightly different note, the cost of baking one is only a few pounds and you can sell a slice for ?2 so the profit margin is quite high as well !
