Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Having been Type l for ever and ever I thought I'd do the right thing and join up with Diabetes UK's media volunteers.
Now you're thinking of volunteering stuff I just want to divert your thoughts..... remember a few months ago the TV ad where it was suggested a sedentary lifestyle could lead to ?Diabetes? but DUK, and others persuaded them to change it to ?Type 2 Diabetes??
Now back to volunteering.... Imagine how I felt when reading through the volunteering questionnaire and the second question is: ?Type 2 Diabetes can go undiagnosed for some time. Do you think this was the case for you? Were you aware of the symptoms?? A later question also assumes my Type 2 status.
Hang on, I thought DUK was there for all Diabetics? I feel insulted that they have assumed my Diabetes to be Type 2, DUK of all people. How insensitive is that?

Yes I need sympathy and some tlc! (Or is it me being over sensitive?)

:(

Well you have just confirmed what I have always thought , Us Type 1's are on our own lol , it seems because we are rare (apparently) that we dont exist !!! Hey I see you are in Devon .... I used to live in Exeter , Exmouth and Ilfracombe , Its lovely in Devon 🙂x

is it true that we are 1 in 25,000 in the UK? or did someone lie to me? because that is quite rare...

Insulinaddict09 it sure is lovely in Devon, much sunnier than the Northwest!!!
Katie I've never heard that I'm so rare, hopefully someone knows the truth about this.

Hi, it does seem that they have been unclear in their questionnaire, but most diabetics are Type 2 - we Type 1's are very much a minority! I think the best thing would be to give them immediate feedback about your reaction - it's something they really need to know about, as they certainly don't want to risk alienating supporters! Please don't let it put you off being a volunteer, your help helps all of us, and that means an awful lot.🙂

I didnt actually realise how rare we are though , as all my family are type 1's I suppose I just assume there are lots of us and there are not really.

You're right, you are rare.

They did the childrens count. There are more children with diabetes than they thought and far far less with type 2 than they have us believe. Remember all the TV progs and the ads in Balance re the type 2 epidemic in children. (if you have had this discussion and I missed it I apologise).

Well they use to say that there were 21,000 children in the UK with diabetes and 20,000 were type 1 and 1000 and rising were type 2. Well lo and behold what a crock of s**t. In England (not the UK) there are approx give or take literally a handful 23,000 type 1 children and only (roll of drums) 368 type 2 children, ok not good but hardly and epidemic !!!

What is it they say with adults, is it either 95% of people with diabetes have type 2 or is it 80% have type 2. Type 1 are few and far between but its there and DUK should be helping everyone.
