Diabetes UK begging for DD funds

Just had a 4 minute phone call from Diabetes Uk (or an agent for them) telling me how much they appreciated my contribution and asking me if I would consider giving them ?5 a month by direct debit. When I said that I didn't think it was a good idea as I am a pensioner, she asked if I would consider giving them my annual subscription by direct debit so they would know what income they were getting regularly. All very smarmy and off putting. Would I mind them phoning me in future, she asked - yes I would mind, right in the middle of Emmerdale😱, thank heaven for pause live tv

Emerdale is rubbish i'd have paid the fiver to stay on the phone lol


On a more serious note, these calls are annoying and the caller has no idea of what kind of vulnerable person is on the other end of the phone.

Just had a look at my account with them and the renewal is the middle of next month, so no doubt that triggered the call.
From a male point of view Emmerdale has the best looking women🙄

DUK are having a bit I a fundraising push. I had one of these calls a few weeks back. I didn't agree either, but I guess they are just following up 'warm contacts' with an interest in the work first 🙄

This kind of fund raising seriously annoys me!

When sorting through my mum's accounts after she had died we found loads of direct debits followed by top up donations she had made because of their follow up phone calls/begging letters. I was quite disgusted with them all to be honest and is one reason why I will not set up direct debits with any charities. I donate time or money via cash at collections or donations to their shops - nothing traceable.

I wont do DD donations either. Don't mind an odd one off donation or I will go in to a shop and make a donation but don't want heaps of stuff comming from my account.

Thanks for this thread Vicsetter, it has just reminded me that my membership runs out this month, just checked and it already has so will sort that out. I don't blame you for not agreeing to set up a DD either good on you!

I also would not have been too pleased if they had bothered me during Emmerdale but I don't ever pick up my phone if it rings then lol

Thing is with some charities is that they spend silly amounts of money on freebies where that could be put to better use. I thought supporting a charity is about the support/research they do. I know that is where I want my money to go and not on free pens, bagdes, bags and the like. I work for a National charity and pleased to see they haven't gone down that route ok Rant over !

Afraid im not ashamed to say I dont give to charity, well I tell a lie I gave on here to Alan,Im extremely wary of them all no matter how good they are, money is so sparse these days and IMO charity begins at home,thats not to say I dont have compassion for charities/homeless people etc..

I had a letter from DUK once I think it was but i never gave a reply.

Personal choice innit

P.s I would also never answer when a soap was on 🙂

p.p.s the worse ones are those on your local high street, my boss was telling me last week one was down Chiswick high steeet came bounding towards him he said sorry i dont have time and she put her arms out and said surely you have time for a hug grr

I do agree with you to a point Steff and like I was saying Sat about giving to charities overseas that a lot of the money doesn't even see the people it's meant for.

Some people are just out for a con, it's getting easy these days to get people to part with their hard earned and I feel for people who get caught out.

I had a call also a few weeks back and just told them that I had only so much money coming in I could not do it.

Don't have a lot of choice about answering the phone I run a guest house. However I have now updated my account with DUK so they don't have my telephone number and I've used a disposable email as well so I can just give up on them.

Shall remember that Vicsetter next time we are up in your neck of the woods, 2010 Christmas was last time and we stayed just outside Perth (beautiful place) on our way up to the Black Isle.

Got a reminder letter from them today and see they have my old number so won't be updating that one lol.
