Diabetes is the single largest cause of leg amputation, kidney failure requiring dialysis, and irreversible blindness in Malaysia.
THE results of the 4th National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) 2011 was announced recently, and as far as good news goes, there?s not much to be optimistic about.
We now know that the prevalence of diabetes has been increasing by leaps and bounds over the last three decades, and this rate is accelerating.
The first NHMS in 1986 showed a diabetes prevalence of 6.3% in adults above the age of 30 years old. This has increased to 8.3% in 1996 and 14.9% in 2006 respectively. The 4th NHMS comes only five years after the 3rd NHMS and the increase of the rate of diabetes to 20.8% is alarming, to put it mildly.
