At risk of diabetes
Hi there,
I'm 18 years old and am suffering several symptoms of diabetes (Extreme Fatigue, Constant Hunger, Extreme Thirst and Constant Urination) and when I was tested back in February my levels were way off for diabetes but once again I have symptoms. I'm being re tested on Tuesday and I hope I can get some answers

I can't begin to imagine what's going through your mind right now but you're in the right place. This forum is full of people who can help you get through this and can help you get a diagnosis and see what's what.

Hi! It’s horrible when you know somethings not right but you just don’t know what’s wrong. Good news is that you were tested last time you had these symptoms and your hba1c blood result was fine. Fatigue could be a deficiency maybe iron, especially at your age us ladies suffer with that quite a bit due to our monthly’s. When my anaemia is bad I have constant cravings for ice, could crunch pints of it. Im sure you will get to the bottom of it and try not to worry. Xx

Thanks. I'm just feeling so confused about things and just wanting everything to stop. It's unlikely to be Anaemia I've been on the pill for three months.

Certain hormones in the pill can cause fatigue and hunger however did you say that your symptoms started before you started taking the pill? Hormones can wreak havoc. You sound like this is really getting you down. Maybe ask the doctors if they can do a full blood count and not just the test for diabetes. Let us know how you get on x

Perfect! They are exactly what you need. It’s great to hear that you are getting the proper tests as it can be difficult these days. I really hope you get your answers and that it’s something simple that can be easily treated. X

Hopefully X There's a history of Type 2 Diabetes in my family so It could be that but when I spoke to my pharmacy they said all my symptoms match up to High Blood Sugar

As well as this I should mention that I have like a chemically/ sweet taste in my mouth that I can't get rid of

Well if you googled those symptoms they would certainly come up with diabetes as a possible explanation. If your really worried, do you have access to a finger prick meter as you mentioned history of type 2 in your family? Maybe a little spot check on your blood glucose would put your mind at rest until your results are through from the doctors x

How does your breath smell to others? I don’t want to scare you but if it smells like pear drops or nail varnish then you need to get tested sooner than Tuesday, by going to A&E or ringing 111 for an urgent appointment, as these can be a sign of DKA which is dangerous. If there is a history of diabetes in your family, does anyone have a fingerprick glucose monitor or urine / blood ketone testing strips that you could use?

Hi @Loobyloo_xoxo 🙂 Have you posted here before under a different name? Your situation sounds familiar.

Did your symptoms go away after the test you had in February that showed you weren’t diabetic? If so, when did they return?

My symptoms have been on and off since about February. They're doing a full blood count and testing my hormones and thyroid as well as diabetes

That’s good they’re testing for other things. If you had the symptoms, then had the test for diabetes which came back negative then it’s very sensible to look for other causes.

Do you have any other health conditions that might be affecting things?

I'm curious as to why the pharmacist didn't do a finger poke test as most do offer this service :(

Hope you get to the bottom of things really soon @Loobyloo_xoxo so that you can start on a plan to try to ease your symptoms.
