OVER half of people tested for diabetes during a city centre roadshow were referred to a GP.

Out of 238 people tested, 133 had a moderate to high risk of developing the disease.

Charity Diabetes UK, which held the two-day roadshow outside Primark, labelled the results frightening.

Bosses said it was estimated 5,300 people in the city had the type 2 diabetes, which can cause heart disease, stroke, kidney failure and blindness.

The roadshow aimed to raise awareness of risks such as age factors or being overweight, or having a close relative with diabetes.
