A device which could help change the lives of people with diabetes has won the inaugural ‘e-health’ award for best use of technology in healthcare.

The Hygieia team was recognised for harnessing innovative technology to support improved health and/or care services in Northern Ireland with its d-Nav device which has been successfully piloted in a world first by the South Eastern HSC Trust.

It allows people with diabetes to easily regulate their own insulin dosage, through a small device the size of a mobile phone.

The pilot, overseen by diabetes expert, Dr Roy Harper, has been so successful that he believes patients will be able to control their condition, radically reducing the need for hospital visits.

Basically, it calculates adjustment to insulin doses on a weekly basis based on BG readings - designed more for Type 2s on insulin who would normally speak to a GP or DSN to get an adjustment, rather than for carb counters 🙂
