Patients with diabetes are being left to struggle with the emotional impact of their condition because of a lack of psychological support, according to Diabetes UK.
It says this is a concern because depression rates for people with diabetes are twice as high as in the rest of the population.
When patients are depressed they are less likely to look after their health, leading to an increased risk of complications of the disease such as blindness, stroke, heart attack, kidney failure and amputations, says the charity.
It says psychological support can also help anxiety and eating disorders that are also more widespread among people with diabetes.
The charity polled 3,845 patients and found that 68% of people who needed psychological support said they had not received it.
