The Majuro-based Diabetes Wellness Center, which runs youth and community exercise programs, healthy cooking classes and a restaurant providing vegetarian meals, also conducts regular outreach screening in the community.
Wellness Center fitness director Harry Herming said that a blood screening of 34 senior citizens earlier in the week showed that 27 ? 79 percent ? had blood sugar levels above 200, confirming that they have diabetes.
The skyrocketing epidemic is further confirmed by the Ministry of Health?s latest quarterly report to the United States, which describes diabetes as ?the number one cause of death and of hospital admissions? in the Marshall Islands.
