NHS Shetland nurse Alison Irvine has been named as Nurse of the Year at the Scottish Health Awards ceremony, which was held in Edinburgh on Thursday night.

Irvine, a diabetes nurse specialist has been awarded the accolade in recognition of the work she does to support people with diabetes to manage their condition and live healthy, active lives.

99% of DSNs also deserve that sort of recognition. The skills required are far wider than just knowing a helluva lot about diabetes, let's face it! Sometimes you just get a specialist nurse who is good at whatever it is. With DSNs I've always had a best friend. I noticed the difference when Pete had prostate cancer !
