Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I have had type 2 for 6 years average HBa/1c
50 six months ago it was 53 lates 56 I have been advised to instead of 500 mg in
Morning and 500 in afternoon to take a1000mg
In the morning and same at night.
I worry I’m 72 is this the thin end of the wedge and I’ll end up on insulin.
My kidney function has gone down as well
But I put that down I’m not drinking enough I have a coffe and two cups a day of tea.
Please advise.

That does seem to be very minimal on the amount of liquid you drink, I thought I didn't drink much compared to other people but probably have 7 cups tea/coffee plus a couple of glasses sparkling water.
If your HbA1C has gone up then that suggests your diet has slipped and you are having more carbohydrates than your body can cope with so I would be looking to reduce the carbs before upping the metformin and see if that makes a difference.
What sort of meals do you have, a few examples would help people to suggest where you could make some savings.
Are you testing your blood glucose at home as that could help you identify the foods which you are no longer able to tolerate.
Reducing portion size if any high carbohydrate foods will help.

Part of my routine morning and evening is to drink a mug of water, a half pint mug, which lives in the bathroom.
So much of what we do is a matter of habit.
I do find all the talk of teas and special almost magical stuff to detox the body, when we have clean drinkable water on tap.
Many type 2s are often producing more than enough insulin, it is just that it is ineffective, so it is not inevitable that you would end up injecting, but I eat a low carb diet, and only eat twice a day, morning and evening, so I have a 12 hour gap between meals to give things a rest - it seems to work. I used a blood glucose meter to see what was the best option for me and it was quite clear.

Hi @David Forfar I agree that you’re not drinking much fluid. Stick with your coffee and teas but add in a few glasses of water and make sure you have enough water every day. Get into the habit.

I know you’ve mentioned your concern about having to go onto insulin before. Can you give us an idea of an average day’s food for you? Perhaps adjustments could be made. You’ll get suggestions if you post what you eat.

There’s a huge amount of medications you can try between metformin and insulin so I wouldn’t worry about that at all yet

I have a few times over the years had to reevaluate my eating and make adjustments.
