Diabetes for life ??

My Dr has stated that even if my bloods go below 48 and stay below 48 for ever, I will still be classed as Diabetic.

He states that once you are diagnosed Diabetic, you stay diagnosed for life - surely that isn't correct?

I'm having a few issues with the medical practice so wanted to check with people who have experience of the issue.

From what I can gather that's true as its our bodys being troublesome, you may not need meds etc if the results stay low but it could flare up again at any time.

Just because you have managed to get glucose levels in a normal range either with diet, meds, exercise or whatever your body will always have a problem with handling carbohydrates so really yes you will always be diabetic.

WOW - so even if I go 15 years with low bloods, I still get penalised on Travel Insurance (and probably life insurance too) by needing to declare I am diabetic.

I don't think it should make a difference if you are not on medication. Maybe there is an insurance expert among the contributors who can answer.

You should not be affected on travel (or car) insurance unless you are adding extra terms. I could buy standard travel insurance and still be covered for most things. However, I pay extra to ensure it covers things like insulin, dka and sever hypoglycaemia. If you are on no medication and not likely to experience dka or hypos, there is no reason for special travel insurance

No insurer is allowed to penalise anyone for merely having diabetes.

PS 'for life' is the meaning of the word 'chronic' applied to ANY medical condition.

Unfortunately yes, there is no cure for diabetes. To get your bloods under 48 presumably you have had to make changes to your diet, do more exercise, take certain meds, or any combination of those. If you go back to your old habits your blood sugars will go straight back up again. Sorry :(

Yes, it's a chronic i.e. lifelong condition which will require continual effort to maintain good blood glucose control. I've dropped from 70+ HbA1c on initial diagnosis to 47 - achieved by a complete overhaul of diet, Metformin, exercise. I have been left under no misapprehension that constant effort is needed as well as alchemy tuning and tinkering to ensure it stays that way until I pop off to the other side...

As a type two I just don't eat more carbs than I can cope with.
My after meal levels are normal, my hba1c is just at the top end of normal. My GP seems to be sulking but I am perfectly happy and as long as I can eat low carb and stay in control I should be fine.

Why would we want a cure ?!?

the forum is a great place to be if we or someone close wasn’t diabetic we wouldn’t be on here ........ alright maybe we would like not have diabetes but having it does in my opinion make us special and there’s a real special bunch of people on here.

There is a growing acceptance of the term remission regarding T2 diabetes in certain circumstances. In my own circumstances, my medical record is marked like this:

I reversed mine.
I'm still on the register, which isn't a register, just an entry on your medical records, by preference.
Still get all the annual checks and tests.
Insurance, I declare I had it, and agree not to take insurance for diabetic complications on my annual travel insurance.

I think your travel insurance will only be impacted if you are in meds. If you manage to get your levels in normal range through diet and exercise, and don’t need meds it will not require additional payments.
Your body has difficulty producing or using sufficient insulin, so you have diabetes. How you manage it is up to you.

My travel insurance isn't impacted at all and I'm on meds. I fully declared it and they said there was no change with my policy etc.

Hi Bexlee,

I wasn't refering to whether we want a cure or not, just that we often hear experts quoting "diabetes is for life" and I find that a bit presumptious, pessimistic and showing no faith in medical development and research etc. Who knows what is ahead and perhaps one day diabetes won't be "for life".

I like to think that I am special with or without diabetes to be honest.
I'd take a cure tomorrow if one appeared.
