The number of leg and foot amputations associated with diabetes has fallen since the introduction of the National Diabetes Foot-Care Screening Programme.
Latest figures show that in 2010 402 diabetes patients were left with no choice but to undergo a lower-limb amputation, falling to 392 in 2011 and 365 last year. Given the medical and associated costs for amputations - roughly ?30,000 per patient - the overall reduction implies a saving for the HSE of over ?800,000. These savings rise even further when outpatient expenses, social welfare, housing alterations and other factors are taken into consideration.
