Diabetes in today's USA

Aye, but let’s not worry about Americans. Nothing will ever change their health system into some kind of “socialist” system.

I think the mark of a civilised country is their system for caring for the sick and needy. Most European countries manage it one way or another without making folk impoverished.

One day, perhaps, the US will develop a sense of shame.

This is a very interesting piece, and a damning indictment of the American system :( Thank heavens for the NHS! 😱 🙂

I learnt a long while ago the modern life is dictated by power and greed. This is just another example of how big business thrives off the backs of those dependent on lifesaving drugs. Very few Bantings and Bests around these days.

I suppose also there is a "scam" made by pharmaceutical companies to the Medicare/Medicaid system. Due some law the public system must buy medication at full price and can't make deals to alternative sources or ask a discount, when private insurance s are doing it. Of course making people to overpay people without "insurance". Look to me that is a 416-bis kind of insurance if you know what I mean.

In related news I saw this on Twitter today from charity T1international

The percentage of monthly income that is spent on diabetes costs in some countries is absolutely eye watering. It makes the US (which we all know is putting people in an extremely difficult position) look relatively generous by comparison.

This is one of the reasons why all the teachers in ultra conservative West Virginia are presently on strike (it’s just been settled). Apart from pay issues, there’s savage cuts into their health and medical care allowances in which they have to satisfy certain inducements just to receive proper health coverage.

Very interesting read. I may slam the HSE here in Ireland a lot but thank God I am still not living there. I was there for a while and while attending GP there had to get all my diabetes medication shipped over to me - don't ask how:confused: Was legal, working, paying tax and had health insurance from my employer but even with this (and it was good) my bill for diabetic supplies would have left me bankrupt and so relied on people's good nature🙂. Wasn't aware that it had got so bad in the States.

Thanks for the link - fascinating and very sad. I have been amazed at the high prices for strips etc on the USA pharmacy shelves let alone insulin.

Given that many folk are having to fund the Libre system, maybe the UK should be included as well. My PIP covers the cost, mind, so my income is unaffected. If it didn’t, I would sit between NZ and USA, but a lot of folk wouldn’t.
