Some patients with COVID-19 are at higher risk of neurological complications like bleeding in the brain and stroke, according to a study being presented at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). The researchers said these potentially life-threatening findings were more common in patients with hypertension and diabetes.

The virus that causes COVID-19 first attacks cells in the respiratory system, often leading to an inflammation of the lungs that puts people at risk of contracting pneumonia. But the virus' impact has also been felt in other systems of the body.
"COVID-19's effects extend far beyond the chest," said study lead author Colbey W. Freeman, M.D., chief resident in the Department of Radiology at Penn Medicine in Philadelphia. "While complications in the brain are rare, they are an increasingly reported and potentially devastating consequence of COVID-19 infection."

Tick, tick :(

Yeah Alan - I really needed to hear that, too.

Having diabetes increases your risk of pretty much everything though. Doesn’t mean you will get it.

I think the word "may" in headlines should be banned and replaced by "probably won't".

And pigs may fly.

Nobody has ever seen one do it - but that does not prove they can't! LOL

Pig Sushi

Just when I think I have heard the most bizarre research being conducted into finding a cure for diabetes, along comes another, even more extraordinary notion! Pig sushi definitely makes it into my top ten potential cures! Apparently, according to this New Scientist article, scientists have been exploring the potential of using porcine islet cells coated in a seaweed-derived extract to transplant into humans. The pig cells used are taken from a special breed of pig which lives only on Auckland Island south of New Zealand, which has been isolated for over two centuries and is free from any organism likely to infect humans. The seaweed helps to overcome the possibility of the cells being rejected by the host body.

I await with wonder and eagerness the ‘cure’ that will trump Pig Sushi on my all-time list of diabetes cures!

Waiter, excuse me, but what’s this dish here?
It sounds quite revolting and decidedly queer!
For I always thought sushi was made out of fish,
But what you are offering is a quite different dish!

Ah yes sir, pig sushi – a specialty of ours,
And a dish that’s possessed of some magical powers!
It’s pork wrapped in seaweed from the Sargasso Sea,
And it cures diabetes (though there are no guarantees!)

But why so expensive for seaweed and pork?
Is it served with champagne and a solid gold fork?
Do they fly pigs from China on a business class fare?
Do they pluck strands of seaweed from a fair mermaid’s hair?

Not quite sir, but almost, for the pigs that we seek,
Live south of New Zealand in a herd that’s unique…
Some say they are tended by mystical elves,
And they don’t need a plane as they fly here themselves!

Well it sounds like a meal that is fit for a king!
Whoever could imagine such a remarkable thing?
Bring it at once! I can’t wait to be cured!
And there’ll be a large tip, of that be assured! :D

Oh Alan! That is absolutely brilliant! It has really put a smile on my face today! How long does it take you to compose something like that? It is just genius!

Glad you enjoyed it :D Most of my poems take about an hour to write, once I have the inspiration! 🙂

You were clearly inspired that day.... I love the "seaweed stands from a mermaids hair" line... which I now see I have misquoted. 😳 That is so visual!

That’s probably about half an hour longer than it took for the author of this report to dream this up. Stroke is often the first sign of underlying hypertension. That’s why we treat hypertension. Covid-19 is almost an irrelevant association.

Seems to me that everything that a Covid-19 veteran gets is due to Covid. They are marginally more likely to be struck by lightning, for instance, because once recovered they go out for walks. Or to be struck by a bus for the same reason.

I shouldn’t worry, anyway. The more underlying conditions you have, you are more likely to die from Covid, though that is far less likely than recovering. Think absolute risks, not relative risks.

The more underlying conditions you have the more likely you are to die.... full stop.... but we are all going to die anyway.

I keep thinking about how nice a really long restful sleep is and what a shame it is when the alarm goes off and spoils it.😳

Brilliant Alan. Thank you for putting a smile on my face.

I often wonder if the people with 'underlying conditions' actually outnumber those without any! 😱 :D

My only problem with the idea of pig sushi is the fact that I understand ordinary bog standard sushi is made from raw fish. Yet it's potentially extremely UN healthy to eat pork that hasn't been cooked thoroughly. Especially if they aren't farmed and especially aren't butchered to modern hygiene standards. Hey ho - life is full of risks!! LOL
