Dr. Brian Lake made an important point at Winter Haven Hospital's diabetes fair earlier this month.
"Uncontrolled diabetes is the leading cause of blindness and kidney failure in the United States," the Gessler Clinic endocrinologist said. "Controlled diabetes is the leading cause of nothing."
An increase in the types of diabetes medicines available is cause for hope for the one in three people born today who can expect to develop type-2 diabetes at some point.
"We have 12 unique classes of diabetes medication," he said. "Only one of them is insulin."
