AN amputation is being carried out on diabetic patients every day, with just seven of the 16 new posts for podiatrists in the health service having been filled.

Diabetics have higher levels of blood glucose, which can damage the nerve endings in many areas of the body and organs.

Podiatrists are specialists in footcare who can help diabetics take care of their feet and avoid damage caused by foot ulcers and infections. But there is a big gap in services as recruitment has not taken place in Sligo, Cavan, Drogheda, Mullingar, Kilkenny, Kerry, Beaumont, Waterford and Wexford.
