A CONSULTANT has played down concerns after a North-East hospital was named as having the highest rate of diabetes among its patients in the country.

A national newspaper identified Bishop Auckland Hospital in County Durham as having the highest rate for diabetes, with 35 per cent having the chronic condition.

The next highest rates – according to an NHS – were at Hammersmith Hospital in West London, which had 28 per cent, followed by 25 per cent at West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven, Cumbria.

The report said the condition is putting an increasing strain on the NHS, costing an estimated £10bn a year.
