A dog can be a great companion for a family, but rarely do they play such a vital role as Roots the cocker spaniel.

The smart pet looks out for Neil Dowling and his eight-year-old son Jack, who both have diabetes.

Roots has been trained to sniff out changes in their blood sugar levels and fetch a testing kit before they get too low ? helping avoid the risk of collapse.

Roots was provided by charity Medical Detection Dogs (MDD) and is the only one in the country looking after two people.
