Leicester is the best performing area in England for giving people the NHS Health Check, according to a report by Diabetes UK.

The report, NHS Health Checks in Local Authorities, showed that 23 per cent – about 7,740 – of eligible people in the city aged 40 to 74 got one of the checks in the first nine months after responsibility for the programme – which assesses people for risk of type two diabetes and other chronic conditions – switched from NHS to local government control.

Leicester was one of only eight areas checking enough people to be on track to meet the levels in Public Health England's vision – of all those eligible receiving such a check every five years.

The England average was 6.4 per cent, while in Leicestershire, nine per cent – 18,422 – had the check.
