A new campaign is being launched in west Essex after a survey found that residents were not aware of the serious complications that can be caused by diabetes.
Less than half of people surveyed were aware that diabetes can cause serious complications such as amputations, according to the new research commissioned by Diabetes UK.
The nationwide survey of 1,986 people - which was conducted by Ipsis Mori - suggests that "only" 43 per cent of people are aware that diabetes can cause foot ulcers or amputations. In the last three years, there have been 105 diabetes-related amputations in west Essex.
Following the results of the survey Diabetes UK has said it is concerned that awareness of the impact diabetes can have is so low.
