The HSE?s failure to fill key nursing posts is impacting on diabetes sufferers in Galway, an advocacy group has claimed.

Approximately 11,000 people in Galway have diabetes, with most suffering from Type 2 Diabetes (T2D), according to Diabetes Action, which has raised concerns that an Integrated Care Diabetes Nurse Specialist position has yet to be filled in Galway/Roscommon.

The Government has approved funding for the appointment of 17 nurses across the country to support the phased roll out of a new community-based healthcare approach for T2D called integrated care that aims to reduce preventable complications from the illness and improve patient health outcomes.

However these positions remain unfilled, despite funding being available since the beginning of this year.
